And Zayn Malik made a crack about his old band as he picked up the coveted New Artist Of The Year gong at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.
However, he sensationally snubbed his girlfriend Gigi Hadid during his victory speech, though he made up for not giving her even the most cursory of mentions by giving her a kiss backstage as she hosted the star-studded event.

Comedic compass: Zayn Malik mocked One Direction by underlining his was the only name on the coveted New Artist Of The Year gong at the AMAs in Los Angeles on Sunday
What snub? He was given a warm embrace by girlfriend Gigi Hadid despite not giving her the briefest of mentions in his victory speech as he thanked his loved ones
After taking to the stage the English star poked fun at his previous role as Harry Styles' sidekick in One Direction, saying: 'Wow - this just has my name on it, right?'
He then proceeded to thank what seemed to be all of his nearest and dearest, with just the one noteworthy aforementioned exception.
Bradford beefcake Zayn said: 'I can't thank the people that have been with me every day the past year enough.
Standing here is crazy. My mom, my dad, everybody in my family that's been supporting me the past year, especially my dad. Thank you, Dad.'
Just checking: The joker read the inscription on his trophy to make sure One Direction was not mentioend
Loved ones: He thanked his family and even his fans but snubbed his famous girlfriend
His supporters were the next to be lathered with praise, as he added, 'Also, big thank you to you guys.
'I didn't expect anybody to still vote for me. So thank you, and I"ll put it on my fireplace.'
At least he was soon able to sweep his unfortunate faux pas under the carpet, as he bumped into Gigi, 21, backstage, where he gave her a quick hug and a kiss.
Next to the carriage clock? The Bradford beefcake promised he would put his trophy 'on my fireplace'
Making waves: It was a case of high fives all round after he scooped the prestious paperweight
No doubt he will have offered his other half his unswerving support after she was roundly criticised for mocking future First Lady Melania during her opening stand-up bit.
Meanwhile Zayn was not the only One Direction big beast prowling the stage at the thrilling event.
For Niall Horan was also at the showpiece event, where he performed his dirge-new solo single This Town.
Viewers were treated to a host of performances during the evening, with Lady Gaga, John Legend, Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj among the performers.
Not so fast: The pop singer was soon accosted backstage by his girlfriend
Take a walk on the wild side like Gigi in Julien Macdonald
Host Gigi Hadid rocked an array of interesting outfits at this year's American Music Awards, but this Julien Macdonald dress is definitely a contender for our favourite number of the night.
We love the nude hue and snake embossed material of this SS17 design, which features strategically placed cut outs to highlight the supermodel's incredible figure. The long sleeves, chunky choker and ankle-skimming length balance out the plunging neckline, and when styled with strappy heels, it's yet another great look on Gigi.
Ladies, it's time to rethink the way you wear animal print. Plain old leopard spots just won't cut it anymore! Unfortunately Gigi's dress isn't available to buy online, but click (right) to take a closer look at the runway version, or show your wild side with the help of our edit below.
Missguided's snake print dress is ssseriously fierce, or try the trend for just £6(!) at Boohoo.
Crisis averted: He was able to sweep his snub under the carpet by giving her kiss and a hug
Meanwhile: His fellow One Direction star Niall Horan performed his own solo single
Justin Bieber was also due to perform, though the pop pixie was appearing via satellite as he was performing on Sunday night in Zurich, Switzerland as part of his Purpose World Tour.
The American Music Awards are now in their 44th year, with fans able to vote online or via Twitter, with voting for most categories closing on November 14.
Voting for the New Artist Award remains open until the end of the first hour of the awards ceremony.
In 2015, One Direction won Artist Of The Year, Taylor Swift's Blank Space was named Song Of The Year and Sam Hunt was awarded the Best New Artist prize.
