Nicki Minaj puts on an X-rated display with a VERY raunchy routine during 2016 American Music Awards

She's no stranger to a provocative performance.

And Nicki Minaj put on an X-rated display during Sunday night's American Music Awards, alongside pop princess Ariana Grande.

Sitting in a large wicker chair surrounded by a bevy of scantily-clad beauties, Nicki spread her legs and kept her modesty by covering her nether region with her hand.

They were in good company as the brightest stars of the music industry turned out in force on Sunday night for the American Music Awards.

Model Gigi Hadid and former SNL funny man Jay Pharaoh acted as hosts.

Drake had the most nominations of any artist, with an impressive 12 nods to his name including Artist Of The Year, while a nomination for Rihanna's Work, which he features on, brings the number up to 13.

It's a record-breaking amount, with Michael Jackson previously holding the most American Music Award nominations in a single year when he received 11 for Thriller.

Rihanna received seven nominations, while Adele and Justin Bieber gained five apiece.

Nominees for the title of New Artist Of The Year are Alessia Cara, The Chainsmokers, DNCE, Shawn Mendes and Zayn.

There is no overall song of the year category this year; instead honours will be handed out for best song in the categories of pop/rock, country, rap/hip-hop and soul/R&B.

Viewers were treated to a host of performances during the evening, with Lady Gaga, John Legend, Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj among the performers.

The American Music Awards are now in their 44th year and fans were able to vote online or via Twitter, with voting for most categories closing on November 14.
