Lights, camera, action! Star Wars' John Boyega shows off his strength and leaps over concrete blocks as he films Hollywood blockbuster Pacific Rim: Maelstrom in Sydney

He made his mark on Hollywood last year after appearing in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Finn, the stormtropper. 

And now, John Boyega is set to return to the big screen in director Guillermo del Toro's forthcoming sci-fi film - Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.

The 24-year-old British actor, who stars alongside Idris Elba in the blockbuster, was pictured getting into character last week while filming in Cronulla, south of Sydney, Australia.

He's back: John Boyega is set to return to the big screen in the up-and-coming Pacific Rim: Maelstrom film, which is currently being filmed in Sydney, Australia

The actor looked downcast as he leaped over wreckage, while surrounded by tents and sheeted shelter.

He rugged up for the shoot, dressing in black jeans and a grey-toned jacket, which he wore over-the-top of a black woollen jumper. 

The scruffy look was complete with sued boots, a scarf and fingerless gloves.

Getting into it: While filming scenes over the weekend in Cronulla, south of Sydney, the 24-year-old was seen getting into charached and jumping over wreckage

Costume: He rugged up for the shoot, dressing in black jeans and a grey-toned jacket, which he wore over-the-top of a black woollen jumper. John finished pff his character's attire with high sued boots, a scarf and a set of gloves

Special affects: During filming, crew members let off a number of smoke machines, which made the filming frame portray a dusty, olden-day affect

Lights, camera, action: The actors were also surrounded by multiple cameras, lighting panels and crew members

The Hollywood star portrays the son of Idris' character, who sacrificed himself at the end of the first Pacific Rim movie and will also co-produce the flick.

The cast also includes Scott Eastwood, Ron Perlman and Max Martini. 

Pacific Rim: Maelstorm was scheduled to shoot in Toronto, Canada, back in 2015 but was forced to postpone. 

 Going to extra lengths: Despite being set by the sea side, crew have transformed the coastline into a destructed area, including fallen walls, tents and sheeted shelter

Real life: Pet dogs, who had dirt rubbed into their fear to make them look abandoned also wondered around on set

Stepping into character: The Hollywood star will play the son of Idris Elba's character, who sacrificed himself at the end of the first Pacific Rim movie

Tough gig: While acting in the movie, he will also co-produce the product, which will be released globally in 2018

It will now film in Sydney's Fox Studios as well as varies locations in Queensland.

The upcoming film, which is due to be released in early 2018, will reportedly cost an estimate of AUD$257 million.

Earlier this year, NSW Deputy Premier and Arts Minister Troy Grant welcomed the filming of the movie, saying: 'This is the latest big production to be secured by the NSW Government's new $20 million Made In NSW Fund.

'The production will inject more than $54 million into the NSW economy and employ around 400 local crew.'
