Research Fellowship — Hong Kong Link

Hong Kong Link Research Fellowship/College Lectureship in Law

Following a generous benefaction from one of its Hong Kong alumni, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (UK), seeks to appoint its first Hong Kong Link Research Fellow/Lecturer in Law from October 2015 (or as soon as possible thereafter). Applications are invited from researchers in any fields of legal scholarship. However, it may be an advantage to offer supervision in one of the areas in which the College has a teaching need, namely Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Land Law, EU Law and Equity. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will be a scholar in the early stages of his or her career for whom a short-term post would prove to be an attractive opportunity to enhance their research and academic profile. He or she will be elected a Fellow of the College.

The appointment will be for a fixed term of three years, and the salary will be, depending on seniority, on point 38-44 of the Cambridge University Spine (currently corresponding to c. £27,000-c. £32,000 p.a.). The appointee will also enjoy all the privileges of a College Fellowship, for example seven meals per week at common table. Lecturing or examining (by invitation) for the Faculty of Law will attract additional remuneration.

A Research Fellow is expected to pursue learning in his or her chosen field and publish the results. The College’s academic environment will provide favourable conditions for research, which will be undertaken freely and without supervision on the part of the College.

As a College Lecturer, the teaching requirement will be six hours per week during Full Term, comprised of small-group supervisions for the undergraduates of Corpus Christi College or, by exchange arrangements, of other Colleges. The successful candidate will be expected to Direct Studies in Law if needed, to encourage the wider flourishing of the legal community at Corpus Christi, and to participate in the recruitment and admission of students to the College (including College and University open days).

Applications should be sent electronically as PDF files to Ms Vanessa Addison, the Master’s Executive Assistant, at hk-link@corpus.cam.ac.uk by Thursday, 13th November 2014. They should include a covering letter detailing the applicant’s interest in the post and which Law Tripos subjects the applicant proposes to teach, a curriculum vitae with details of the candidate’s education record, publications, research, teaching and professional experience, one publication or a piece of work representative of the candidate’s research at its best (article or chapter length), and the names and addresses of three referees who should be asked by the applicants to send references electronically to Ms Addison at the address above.

For further informal information please contact the Senior Tutor, Dr. Marina Frasca-Spada by email on mfs10@cam.ac.uk.
Law at Corpus

Corpus Christi College admits between four and seven undergraduate lawyers per year and so there are 18-20 undergraduates in residence in total. In addition there are about six LLM and PhD students forming part of the College’s large graduate community, centered around Leckhampton House, off Grange Road.

The teaching members of the College are as follows:

Dr Nigel Simmonds, University Reader in Jurisprudence, Fellow in Law (since 1985), supervises Jurisprudence. (Director of Studies for Michaelmas and Lent Terms 2014-5.)

Prof David Ibbetson, Regius Professor of Civil Law and President of Clare Hall, is Praeceptor in Law (Fellow 2000-13). He supervises Civil Law and Legal History

Dr Jonathan Morgan, University Lecturer in Law, Fellow and Director of Studies in Law (since 2012), supervises Contract Law and Torts. (On sabbatical leave for Michaelmas and Lent Terms 2014-5).

Honorary Fellows of the College include former Court of Appeal judges Sir Murray Stuart-Smith and Sir Martin Nourse, Baroness Butler-Sloss (the first woman to sit in the Court of Appeal and to preside over a Division of the High Court), and the current Chancellor of the High Court, Sir Terence Etherton.

The College has an active subject group, the Nicholas Bacon Law Society, run by student members under the honorary presidency of Mr Justice Stuart-Smith. The Society organises parties, speaker meetings and a moot for all fresher undergraduates. In addition the Society’s annual dinner brings together past and current law students and legal practitioners.

The separate Corpus Christi Nicholas Bacon Fund (Registered Charity 1115923) provides financial support to law (and other) students at the College, for the assistance of their studies.
