Support for Clinical Students

The College has various sources of funding to support clinical medic electives.

Students are encouraged to apply for more than one of the following named Bursaries if their intended elective fits the relevant Bursary criteria. However, the Stephen Hales and Lawrence Weaver Bursaries will not be awarded to the same student. All applicants for elective support will automatically be considered for a grant from the Smyth fund.

Applications should be submitted by 5.00pm Friday March 11th 2016 to Dr Alexis Joannides (DoS in Clinical Medicine) via email (aj238@cam.ac.uk) and copied to the Tutor for Advanced Students, Dr Christopher Brookes (graduate-tutor@corpus.cam.ac.uk). Applications should provide a financial breakdown of the proposed activity, including an indication of the sum requested and an indication of how the remaining funds required would be raised. The application should be accompanied by a letter of support from an appropriate person, such as a Director of Studies or Supervisor.

Within two months of the completion of the project for which funding was received, a 1500-2000 word report must be submitted by email to Dr Joannides (with a copy to Dr Brookes), including a financial statement, details of the work carried out and a summary of what the recipient learnt from it. A recipient may also be asked to give a presentation on the project to an appropriate college society, such as the Lewis Society of Medicine.

Stephen Hales Bursary 2016

This Bursary is intended to encourage student members of Corpus (postgraduate and undergraduate) to take an interest in and learn about disease prevention in its widest context.

This could be by supporting clinical students in electives, or supporting students from any discipline to carry out relevant project work, which could include travel to archives and internships. It is intended that the elective or project should be completed before October 1st 2016.

The bursary is made possible by a gift from Dr Tim Carter, Old Member and specialist in disease prevention. One award will normally be made in each year, although exceptions to this may be possible. The value will normally be up to £1000 depending upon the circumstances.

Lawrence Weaver Travel Bursary 2016

This Bursary is intended to encourage medical undergraduates and clinical medical student members of Corpus to take an interest in the developing world by choosing to spend their elective period of study in a medical centre in the developing world, or to visit a developing country for exchanges or other educational purposes. It may also be used to help such students who have come to study at Corpus from the developing world.

The bursary is made possible by a gift from Dr Lawrence Weaver who is an Old Member of the College. One award will normally be made in each year, although exceptions to this may be possible. The value will normally be up to £1000 depending upon the circumstances.

Gordon Medical Bursary 2016

This Bursary is intended to support clinical medical students who require financial support for their elective placement.

The bursary is made possible by a gift from Dr John Gordon, Fellow of the College from 1974 to 1986, and Mrs Diana Gordon. Subject to the availability of funds and of deserving recipients, there shall normally be between two and four awards per year. Awards may be given to students who are in receipt of other funds, for example in cases where ambitious projects are planned. Preference may be given to applicants whose proposed elective placement has a research focus, but the placement need not be laboratory-based.
