Talks, Walks, Films, Trips in Michaelmas Term 2016
FAITH AND LIFE MEETINGS - Monday evenings in term time
We host fascinating visiting speakers, have discussions on topical issues, do Bible Study and watch films. Meetings start with free refreshments. The first meeting is Monday 10th October.
The Dean also arranges Saturday day trips and walks in the countryside. Recent trips have included a London day trip when we visited the Ai Wei Wei exhibition at the Royal Academy, had lunch in China Town, then attended Choral Evensong at Westminster Abbey with a free tour of the Abbey afterwards. In Michalemas Term (2015) we visited villages and amazing historical churches in north Norfolk (where the College has many historical connections).

| Monday 17 October – Film and Pizza night – Of Gods and Men |
| 7.30 D4. We watch this powerful account of the witness of a group of French Cistercian monks during the Algerian civil war. ‘Severe, austere and deeply moving’ (The Guardian). Projected onto D4 shutters. Free pizza and drinks. |
| Monday 24 October – Talk and Discussion – The Scandal of Poverty |
| 7.30 D4. Dr David Blunt, Department of Politics and International Studies and Corpus Fellow leads a discussion on global injustice. Dr Blunt’s research interest is ‘crimes against humanity’. |
| Monday 31 October – Film and Pizza night – Pasolini’s La Ricotta |
| 7.30 D4. Dr JD Rhodes, Corpus fellow in MML curates La Ricotta, (1963), Pasolini’s experimental meditation on the Crucifixion and the act of film-making. Dr Rhodes works on European and American film. |
| Monday 7 November – Theological College Visit |
| An Evening at Westcott House Anglican theological college, hosted by our ordinand Dr Ayla Lepine. An opportunity to meet ordinands and hear all about ‘vicar school’! Arrive at Westcott House, Jesus Lane, for dinner in the dining hall at 6.00 pm Depart at 10.00 pm, after Compline. |

| 7.30 D4. Author and journalist Jimmy Burns talks about his acclaimed new book on Pope Francis ‘Pope of Good Promise’. |
| Monday 21 November – Talk and Discussion – Bible and War |
| 7.30 D4. Dr Andrew Mien, Biblical scholar and theologian, speaks about the use and abuse of the Bible: ‘Swords into ploughshares or ploughshares into swords? -The Bible and the Great War’. |

| Saturday 29 October – INTENSE CORPUS – Guided Tour |
| 10.00-1.00 Guided Tour of the College with Professor Peter Carolin (former head of CU Architecture Department) Sibella Laing and Lucy Hughes (College Archivist). On this tour we visit some of the hidden spaces of the College, view the original plans for the New Court, and discover the stained glass windows and other unique features of the Hall, the Chapel and the Old Court. Don’t miss this opportunity to discover your College! |
| Saturday 12 November – AMERICAN CEMETARY AND LITTLE GIDDING |
| A day of remembrance and poetry: 10.00 am – 6.00 pm. We visit the poignant, beautiful and unsettling American Cemetery with its mosaic-filled chapel (see cover). We continue to Little Gidding, a tiny hamlet in remote countryside north west of Cambridge, famed for its associations with TS Eliot. We share a simple lunch in the retreat- house. In the afternoon we read poetry of war and peace, and conclude the day with Holy Communion in the enchanting 18th century chapel, and a walk in the fields.This visit is timed to coincide with Remembrance Sunday the following day (services at 10.50 am and 6.00 pm at the College Chapel). |
| Saturday 19 November – LONDON DAY TRIP |
| A thousand years of faith and art: We visit two of the world’s most important galleries: The Courtauld Gallery, and the V&A where we see the acclaimed Opus Anglicanum exhibition, which features medieval English embroidery. We attend Choral Evensong at St Paul’s Cathedral. |
HUMAN RIGHTS LETTER WRITING - Wednesday lunch times in term time
