Biography:
After reading Classics at Cambridge, Stuart Laing had a first career in the British diplomatic service. After Arabic language study in Lebanon, he specialised in Arab and Middle Eastern affairs, serving in Saudi Arabia early in his career, and later in Cairo. He was Deputy Ambassador in Prague and Riyadh, and was appointed High Commissioner to Brunei (1998-2002), Ambassador to Muscat (2002-05), and Ambassador to Kuwait (2005-08). He was elected Master in May 2008, and took office on 1 October 2008.

In addition to his duties as Master, he researches and writes on Arab and East African history and in 2012 he published, jointly with Mr Robert Alston, Unshook till the end of time, a book on the history of Britain’s relationship with Oman.

Stuart Laing is a keen amateur musician; he plays keyboard instruments and the oboe. His other recreations are desert travel and hill-walking. His wife, Sibella, is a Newnham alumna, Chair of the Newcomers and Visiting Scholars organisation, and a Cambridge City Guide. Their three adult children also studied at Cambridge.
