'She reminds me of Heath Ledger': Director Ang Lee reveals he chose Kristen Stewart for latest film as she struck the right emotional chord

Kristen Stewart stars in Ang Lee's new drama, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, which tells the story of a traumatised US soldier who is celebrated as a hero.

And in an interview published by News Corp this week, director Ang revealed that the 26-year-old's portrayal in 2007's Into The Wild made him choose her for a lead role.

Ang, 62, who directed Brokeback Mountain in 2005, said: '(Kristen) reminds me of how Heath Ledger used to work for me.'

'If you saw him in one movie - like Monster's Ball - you just remembered him. He was like the emotional core,' Ang said. 'Kristen gave me that vibe.'

The Hollywood actress, known from the Twilight franchise, was 17 at the time.

It's been nearly a decade since the tragic passing of Heath.

The Lords Of Dogtown star died in 2008 in New York from cardiac arrest brought on by prescription drug intoxication.

Heath left behind ex girlfriend Michelle Williams and their daughter Matilda, aged two at the time of his death.

A few months prior to his passing, the Perth-born actor filmed The Dark Knight.

He went on to receive several posthumous awards for his performance.
