Shameless shoppers have been filmed fighting over 20p fruit and vegetables in Tesco in a frenzy that outdid the empty Black Friday's aisles.

Pub manager Stewart Tobias from Luton, Bedfordshire, filmed the extraordinary scenes at the Dunstable branch of Tesco at 7.45pm on Wednesday night as the discounted fruit and vegetables was wheeled out.

Mr Tobias had seen the tail end of the chaotic scenes when the discounted meat was put out and decided to watch the madness unfold in the fruit and veg aisle.

The footage shows a Tesco staff member laughing as shoppers scramble over each other to get to the discounted food even before it is put on the shelves - some apparently having waited for 'hours'.

Mr Tobias, 34, said: 'It was just crazy watching people fighting for fruit and veg that had 50p off - I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

'It's not about Black Friday, it's all about Tesco madness. I went into the store on Wednesday night to pick up some bits with my girlfriend Karen and saw all these people running around picking up cheap meat.

'I spoke to a bloke who worked there who said the same people came in each day and stood around for hours waiting for it to come out. They then buy it and go.

'Apparently it's the same in stores across the country.'

The footage shows a bemused Tesco staff member laughing as ten shoppers rushed over and went into a bargain-hunting frenzy as the marked-down fruit and veg was wheeled out.

A voice can be heard saying: 'That's nuts, innit?'

Mr Tobias said: 'We saw one guy dump his trolley and run over to pick food up that was discounted from £2 down to 20/30p.

'Another person picked up five or six items - he didn't care what is was, he just appeared to want something for cheap.

Mr Tobias said he didn't get the chance to bag himself a bargain due to the speed at which other shoppers swiped the fruit and veg

'They didn't seem to be that needy, people just like a bargain. One bloke was believed to be a restaurant owner.

'I spoke to a couple of girls who work there who said it was quite normal and happened every day.'

Mr Tobias said he didn't get the chance to bag himself a bargain due to the speed at which other shoppers swiped the fruit and veg.

Mr Tobias said: 'When I saw everyone it looked quite dangerous - I was quite scared to get there in to be honest.'

A Tesco spokesman said: 'Our Black Friday event is proving to be extremely popular with customers, both in store and online.

'We anticipate over 14 million visits to our Tesco Direct website across our Black Friday event with over four million visits expected on Black Friday itself.

'To make sure no good food goes to waste we do reduce the price of some fresh products towards the end of the day. When the store is busy we have colleagues on hand to manage the reductions to make sure all our customers can shop safely.'
