A New Orleans shooting that left nine injured and one dead early Sunday morning has left the city's mayor decrying the violence there as 'out of control'.

Ten people aged between 20 and 37 - eight men and two women - were shot after gunfire broke out on the city's famous Bourbon Street, at the intersection of Iberville Street, around 1:30am, police said. One male victim died.

Two people were arrested on gun charges after the deadly fracas - one of whom was also injured in the gunplay. They were not related to one another, police said.

The uninjured suspect was found to be in illegal possession of a handgun, according to authorities.

The man who died passed away in hospital, police said. They have not announced the condition of the nine injured victims.

Police taped off a crime scene outside the Krystal restaurant and Hustler Hollywood.

NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison said that police were 'proactively' moving against people carrying weapons on Bourbon Street and in the surrounding French Quarter.

The city restricts the use of weapons in the French Quarter during festivities, such as Mardi Gras. People had been partying in the area following the Bayou Classic college football event.

that this was not the place or the time to bring firearms to this French Quarter for the Bayou Classic event - or any event,' Harrison said. 'We've made that very clear.

'We're going to pursue this to the fullest extent of the law, because this was not something that should have happened.'

He added that there were about 30 officers in the area as part of an increased taskforce to handle the post-event party, and that police converged on the shooting shortly after shots broke out.

A man and a woman were seen being taken from the scene in handcuffs, witnesses told NOLA.com.

Ronnie Buendia, 25, who works in a parking garage on Iberville Street, told NOLA.com that he heard four shots. 'Everybody was running into the garage trying to get away,' he said.

Eight other people were arrested in the French Quarter over the weekend on gun charges.

In force: Police were out in force at the time of the shooting because of the close of the football game and responded quickly, officials said
