'I've spent much of my year in bed': Girls star Lena Dunham reveals she's had three successive surgeries and is in constant pain

Lena Dunham has revealed that she's undergone three successive surgeries this year as she continues to deal with ill health.

In her Lenny newsletter Tuesday, the Girls star shares that she has 'spent much of my year in bed.'

'I was supine, feet up, heating pad on, recovering from three successive pelvic and uterine surgeries that rendered me unable to explore the world beyond my apartment, or maybe just angry and unwilling,' she wrote.

Sick: Lena Dunham has revealed she's been bedridden and in pain for most of the year and had three pelvic and uterine surgeries. She shared this selfie Sunday in which she looks pale and drawn

Lena, 30, had a well-publicized emergency operation in early March for a ruptured ovarian cyst.

The month before, she'd cancelled her participation in a press tour for her HBO series citing ill health and her ongoing battle with endometriosis, a condition of the uterus that affects ovaries and fallopian tubes and causes abdominal pain.

What is new is the revelation that the actress and producer had undergone additional surgeries linked to her condition and that although she was seen filming her sixth and final season of Girls over the summer, she was not well.

Kept it hidden: The Girls star carried on with filming for the sixth and final season of her HBO series over the summer despite her ill health. She's pictured on location in NYC in May

Kept suffering hidden: Over the summer, Lena posted this snap to her Instagram. But on Tuesday, she explained she'd been at her 'sickest' and in pain and gone straight back to bed

'At my sickest I walked into the street in a summer skirt....... and snapped an image to promote my glittery shoes, my idyllic summer, my own blessed life. Pain pulsed across my back and down my legs,' she explained in the Lenny newsletter.

'I smiled, flashed a peace sign, and posted, content that the people who didn’t know me but thought they did wouldn’t be feeling sorry for me that night. I went back to bed.'

In July, she had shared video of herself dancing around her apartment with her arm in a sling after breaking her elbow. It transpires that she sustained the fracture 'between surgery two and surgery three.'

Lena concluded: 'Today I’m having a down day. I’m in bed, trying to meditate away the referred pain and also the guilt that comes with admitting what your body can’t do.'

'I am whole, except for this irrelevant flesh,' she said.

Hurt: In July the actress, 30, shared this snap of herself being treated for a broken elbow. In her Lenny newsletter, she revealed the fracture occurred between surgeries two and three

On Monday, she had posted to Instagram a cutting response she received after announcing she was too sick to make it to a book signing.

'No offense but you're too sick to sit and sign books?' the Twitter user wrote. 'I was back at work 6 days after a c-section.'

Lena wrote alongside the post that illness or childbirth or other ailments that impact people's abilities to carry on with normal life should be treated as 'the serious and personal journeys that they are.'

Fighting back: On Monday, Lena shared this response she received via Twitter to her announcement she was too sick to show up for a planned book signing

Carrying on: : Lena, seen November 14 in Hollywood, suffers from endometriosis and in March had to undergo an emergency operation for a ruptured ovarian cyst
