A Taste of Tudor Life
A Proper Newe Booke of Cokerye
Now you have the chance to conjure up some culinary delights from the 16th century in your own kitchen this week with the publication of one of the oldest cookbooks in England

Recipes such as ‘To Stewe Capons in Whyte Brothe’ and ‘To Make a Dyshefull of Snowe’ feature in A Proper Newe Booke of Cokerye which has been published by Corpus Christi College, Cambridge as part of the College’s 650th anniversary celebrations.

The original was published in 1557 and is in the Parker Library at the College. It is believed to have been used by Margaret Parker, wife of Matthew Parker who was Master of the College from 1544 to 1553 and Archbishop of Canterbury in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
Mrs Parker was the first Master’s wife to live and entertain in the Master’s Lodge at the College. The tradition of hospitality in the Lodge continues to this day, nearly five centuries later.

The editor of the book is Anne Ahmed, wife of the former Master of the College, Professor Haroon Ahmed.
“The unusual recipes together with the history of the original owners of this cookery book made this an intriguing project,” she said.
“It includes an introduction to the life and times of Matthew and Margaret Parker against the background of momentous changes in Tudor England. The book features the original recipes from the 16th century together with modern versions for twenty-first century cooks.”
