'Wasn't it clever?': Carly Simon talks trolling Donald Trump with reworking of hit You're So Vain in pre-election ad

Before the election on November 8 she gave permission for her hit You're So Vain to be used in a commercial smearing presidential candidate Donald Trump.

And in a new interview with Rolling Stone Carly Simon reveals how she was happy with her decision to allow a pro-Clinton super PAC to use the track.

'Wasn't that clever? I've been careful about giving out rights to use [You're So Vain], because I'm looking for the right opportunity for the right usage.' the 71-year-old songwriter explained.

Clever! Carly Simon has said she's happy with her decision to allow a pro-Clinton super PAC to use her track You're So Vain to troll presidential candidate Donald Trump

'And I really like what the Patriotic Artists & Creatives PAC did with it. I think [Trump's] attitude throughout his campaign goes against everything we see as progressive and great for our future.

The New York native added: 'I think his candidacy was representative of the shootings, the hate crimes that happened this year.'

Carly allowed You're So Vain to be used in the anti-Trump commercial which poked fun at his 'apricot face' and strategically dipped 'Make America Great' hats.

It was the first time the musician allowed one of her songs to be used politically.

'I think [Trump's] attitude throughout his campaign goes against everything we see as progressive and great for our future' Simon told Rolling Stone

The video consists of a montage of photographs of Trump after being introduced by journalists as a 'psychopath, narcissist and ego-maniac.'

The well-known song's opening lyric - 'you walked in to the party like you were walking on to a yacht' - was timed with footage of Trump and his wife gliding down an escalator while supporters cheered them.

'Your hat strategically dipped below one eye', the next lyric, was accompanied by an image of a grimacing Trump wearing a campaign baseball cap.

In her only tweak to the track, Simon changed the next line - 'your scarf was apricot' - to ridicule the businessman's perma-tan.

'I really like what the Patriotic Artists & Creatives PAC did with it' Carly said of the anti-Trump video

Simon changed 'your scarf' to jest 'your face it was apricot', sung to accompany a photograph of a bronzed-looking Trump

'And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner': Wedding day photographs of the businessman with his three wives flashed up

The commercial concludes with the tagline: 'Donald Trump. Dangerously vain,' and an instruction to 'Vote Hillary'.

Simon joked to Rolling Stone that all she wants to do now is 'write protest songs' ever since the election.

'I hate that Hillary had to be the one to hit these ridiculous Trump-isms back across the net. It wasn't worth lowering herself to try to beat him. She couldn't be her best, because you can't really shine unless you have a worthy opponent.' she said.

The commercial, produced by the pro-Clinton Patriotic Artists and Creatives PAC, concluded with the message: 'Donald Trump. Dangerously Vain.'
