What causes bad breath, and how do I get rid of it?

This is part three in a continuing series of an interview I had with OraWellness.

Part One: Why is gum disease prevalent even though we brush regularly?
Part Two: Is it possible to remineralize our teeth? And a word on oil pulling…

Today we discuss what causes bad breath, and how to get rid of it.

Nourishing Treasures: What are the causes of bad breath, and what are the best ways to get rid of it?

Ora Wellness: Bad breath is one of those fun subjects that everyone has to deal with but no one wants to talk about! Just our favorite type of subject! :)

Bad breath is primarily caused by 2 factors. Obviously, certain foods that are very aromatic can affect the smell of the breath for hours after eating them. What we are mostly interested in here is the chronic bad breath from the bad bugs of gum disease.

These bad bugs hang around in two main areas. First, letʼs stop bad breath on the easier surface, the tongue. Up to 85% of the bacteria that cause chronic bad breath live on the tongue. Understanding how these bad bugs thrive helps us in stopping chronic bad breath for good.

The bacteria that cause chronic bad breath love low oxygen environments. To create this environment, the bad bugs lay down a layer of plaque on the tongue so they can live within and under this layer of bio-film (aka scum).

So, we have found a quick 2 step process to incorporate into our daily oral hygiene routine to easily lower the bad bug populations on the tongue. First, scrape the tongue of the thick scum layer. You can do this with something as simple as a spoon. We have specific tools called tongue scrapers on our site designed specially to effectively remove biofilm from the tongue. After you have removed their layer of biofilm, now brush your tongue with your toothbrush with any safe antibacterial on your brush. Our OraWellness blend is a very effective antibacterial for this job.

This 2 step cure for bad breath is so effective because with the first step we have removed the layer of biofilm from the bad bugs. Then the second step kills the uncovered bad bugs.

Nourishing Treasures: I love the natural antibacterial properties of your Brushing Blend. I also like that it doubles as a breath freshener.

You have some nice videos on your website – do you have a video showing how to perform this two-step technique?

Ora Wellness: Yes, we have a video titled ʻThe Cure for Bad Breathʼ where we show this technique.

Nourishing Treasures: Excellent! Readers, follow this link and scroll down to the second video. It totally made me chuckle :)

I hope you liked this article. This is the third of several interview questions I asked Ora Wellness. Stay tuned next week when Ora Wellness answers the question, “How important is diet when it comes to teeth health?”

Ora Wellness supplied me with their Brushing Blend and I absolutely LOVE it. It’s a blend of bad bacteria-bashing teeth-healthy essential oils (such as cloves, cinnamon, and myrrh) in a base of almond oil. I love that I don’t have a mouthful of lather – my kids love it, too! It’s a great breath freshener.

Ora Wellness has offered Nourishing Treasures readers a FREE Bass toothbrush with your order of OraWellness Brushing Blend. ONLY when you write “Nourishing Treasures free brush offer” in the customer note section during checkout.

*One free toothbrush per order, not per bottle of brushing blend.

  2. Right. People who do not pay attention to visit a dentist are probably not aware of this especially those who have bad breath. Even they brush their teeth three times a day, still advice from the experts are highly recommended. Of course, having a good toothbrush is important because some of them might damage our gum and cause another oral issue. Nice post ^^
