Make Your Own Fermented Cod Liver Oil Capsules and save some $

If you haven’t started taking your cod liver oil by now, then what are you waiting for? As I mention in my post, Benefits of Vitamin D – Why it’s essential to health + the best food sources, I discuss how vital Vitamin D is for a healthy immune system. Not only can Vitamin D help keep colds and flu away, but it’s also needed for brain development and building healthy bones in children, as well as regulating heartbeat, normal blood clotting, thyroid function and reproduction in adults (and more!).

The best source of supplemental Vitamin D is fermented cod liver oil (FCLO), according to this list of the best food sources for Vitamin D.

In my post Benefits of Fermented Cod Liver Oil – How to Take it Without Gagging, and How it Saves You Money, I described how to get the potent liquid down – swallow with a piece of chocolate.

The other option is to purchase capsules. Although worth it, it does add to the cost of the product. If swallowing capsules is the only way to get it down, it’s more cost-effective to purchase the liquid FCLO and encapsulate it yourself, using this handy-dandy capsule machine, and some empty capsules.

Check out the price per serving of capsules vs. liquid:

Cost of 60 2-cap servings (capsules): $29.99, or $.49/serving

Cost of 120 2ml servings (liquid): $43.99, or $.36/serving

The capsule machine runs around $15, and easily pays for itself, especially if you are using it to encapsulate other things, like turmeric (Read: Make Your Own Turmeric Capsules).

Empty capsules run about a penny a piece.

Making Your Own Fermented Cod Liver Oil (FCLO) Capsules – A Photo Tutorial

1. First, gather your supplies:

Now is the time to fill the capsule machine with the empty capsules, so they are ready to fill (more details on that in the Make Your Own Turmeric Capsules post).

2. Insert the tip of the syringe into the FCLO bottle and pull back on the syringe until full.

3. Slowly push the syringe into each of the capsules that you placed in the bottom tray of the capsule machine.

4. Continue until all the caps are filled.

5. Place the top of the capsule machine, which you have pre-filled, over the bottom of the capsule machine. Press down, pushing the two capsule pieces together, and releasing until they are together in the top piece of the capsule machine.

6. Push the outside top of the lid to release the capsules. That’s it!

I like to store mine in air-tight glass jars, such as Fido jars. You can find them locally, or on Sur la Table or amazon.

Now you know how to save more $  just by taking a few minutes to encapsulate your own fermented cod liver oil :D
