They are more often seen nibbling a nice nut or munching a scrumptious seed.
But faced with extreme hunger, some squirrels turn to meat, eating insects, birds and even smaller rodents.
One African squirrel got so peckish that it risked its life by tucking into a young snake, sparking an epic battle.
Dramatic footage of the encounter shows the ravenous rodent latch on to the tail of its prey.
Stand off: One African squirrel got so peckish that it risked its life by tucking into a young snake, sparking an epic battle
The snake turned its head and hissed in pain, trying in vain to wriggle away.
Then it suddenly pounced, forcing the squirrel to rapidly back away with a fright.
But the desperate rodent came back for more, sinking its teeth into the snake as it repeatedly bit the squirrel in frantic deference.
The squirrel continued to take chunks from the snake's skin, including from its head which was left bloody after one ferocious clash.
Realising that biting it was not enough to deter the squirrel, the snake then wrapped the rodent up in attempt to suffocate it.
But the wriggling rodent wrestled free and the defeated snake could only curl up as it munched its flesh.

Squirrels' diets consist primarily of a wide variety of plants, including nuts, seeds, conifer cones, fruits, fungi, and green vegetation.
However, some squirrels also consume meat, especially when faced with hunger.
Squirrels have been known to eat insects, eggs, small birds, young snakes, and smaller rodents.
Some tropical species have shifted almost entirely to a diet of insects.
