Huge storm batters Sydney on Monday with 5000 lightning strikes, heavy rain and hail

A brief but vicious storm hit Sydney on Monday afternoon, with lightning (pictured) striking as many as 5000 times. Among the carnage caused by the intense storm was a yachtsman hit by lightning, a house set on fire (inset), another struck by a falling tree, heavy rain and hail and long delays to planes and trains, while traffic lights that stopped working caused delays to people driving. Sydney was hammered by the hour-long storm and up to 7000 homes were left without power afterwards. Amazing images captured some of the many lightning strikes which hit the city near some of its most well-known icons, including the Harbour Bridge.

Medical experts are trialling virtual reality headsets in hospital in an attempt to combat loneliness at Christmas. The 'pioneering' experiment will see patients try on devices that will show them animated videos that are hoped will soothe them and help them relax. The clip, which you can watch below, shows a group of people sitting around a campfire reading stories to one another as a sleepy dog patiently watches them. Doctors believe watching the life-like video could cut loneliness among patients on hospital wards during the festive season and one unwell person who has used the virtual reality headset has even reported a reduction in pain. The 'Joy' virtual reality devices are being trialled in Brunswick Private Hospital in Melbourne, Macquarie University Hospital in Sydney, St Andrew's Hospital in Adelaide and Mater Hospital in Brisbane.

Photographer Ingo Gerlach was lucky enough to witness this brutal cat fight at Orsa-Björn Wildlife Park in central Sweden. While running a photo tour in the woods, which house kodiak brown bears, polar bears, european wolves and Siberian tigers, Ingo spotted these two tigers sloping out of the woods.

Horrifying footage has emerged from Argentina showing a child coming with inches of death after her mother helped her down onto the tracks to avoid paying, but failed to spot a train coming the other way. CCTV shows other commuters queuing up to buy their tickets at a station in Buenos Aires, but the negligent parent ushers her daughter onto the railroad. She goes to climb down herself in order to dodge the fare, but suddenly spots the train pulling into the station. She scrambles back up but there is no time for her daughter to follow.
