'She's so American right now': Twitter goes into meltdown as Nicole Scherzinger hilariously mishears East 17's Stay Another Day as 'steak house' on X Factor semi-final

Stay Another Day may have made it to UK Christmas number one in 1994.

Yet the words 'East 17' appear to mean nothing to Nicole Scherzinger as she admitted she had never heard the song before X Factor hopeful's 5 After Midnight performed it on Saturday's semi-final.

The 38-year-old show judge revealed she was left confused by the nineties classic's lyrics, admitting she thought the trio were hilariously singing about a 'steak house' not 'stay now'.

Confused: The words 'East 17' appear to mean nothing to Nicole Scherzinger as she admitted she had never heard of Stay Another Day before X Factor hopeful's 5 After Midnight performed it on Saturday's semi-final

Despite nostalgia being felt at home, she told the boyband: 'I loved how you took a risk this week. I have never heard this song before.

'I thought they were singing about a steak house!'

Thankfully being corrected by her fellow judge Sharon Osbourne, the former Pussycat Doll still managed to belt out a few notes of her new song 'steak house' to a confused looking 5 After Midnight.

Getting a chuckle out of the whole situation, presenter Dermot O'Leary asked the boyband if they could sing their new tune as well as the American beauty.

While Nicole carried on the show, the comment caused viewers to take to Twitter in their droves to share their disdain over her lack of nineties British boyband knowledge.

One user shared: 'WHAT! Nicole Scherzinger's never heard that East 17 song before?'

As another wrote: 'Sorry, how has Nicole Scherzinger never heard East 17's Stay Another Day?????? #xfactor'.

Meanwhile, viewers saw Nicole get feisty on Saturday night's instalment of the talent show stalwart.

Despite trying his hardest to impress the judges, show hopeful Matt Terry was left reeling after music mogul Simon Cowell bashed his a cappella efforts.

Opening the pressure filled night, Matt - who is mentored by the Poison singer -bravely put a unique spin on the traditional Christmas carol Silent Night.

Wearing a winter coat under the studio lights, Matt was soon joined by a choir on stage as he hit his full falsetto, against a booming backtrack.

Not wowed: Yet it did little to impress Simon as he admitted he wasn't wowed by his efforts

Pressure: Reflecting on the performance and the pressure filled night, Matt revealed he put his all into the traditional song

Yet Matt's vocal gymnastics did little to impress Simon as he admitted he wasn't wowed by his efforts.

He explained: 'I though it was nice. It was a bit predictable. It was a little bit, like having the sandwich without the butter.'

Sticking up for her act, Nicole Scherzinger admitted that Matt had touched the audiences hearts with his crooning.

The beauty insisted: 'He's not there to put on a show for you but to touch your heart. It took much more than jingle balls to kick off the show a cappella.'

Ahead of his second song, last remaining boy Matt admitted his song choice was 'scary' as it was relatively unknown.

The 23-year-old belted out Jessie Ware's Say You Love Me from the Fifty Shades Of Grey soundtrack, which caused Louis and Nicole to get on their feet.

Still not impressed by his musical offerings, Simon said: 'I really like you but I don’t think tonight’s been your best night. It sounded like the track had overtaken you. This, for me, was bland.'
