Diego Luna reveals he nearly missed phone call telling him he'd landed role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story... because he thought it was his drunk cousin ringing him at 2am
Diego Luna nearly missed the phone call telling him he was cast for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The 36-year-old actor confessed to People magazine that he contemplated screening the call from the movie's director Gareth Edwards to offer him the role of Captain Cassian Andor.
He said he thought it would just be a drunken cousin calling him.
Making the rounds: Diego Luna waved to cameras at Narita International Airport in Chiba, Japan on Tuesday, having arrived for the Japanese premiere of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
The love of his craft: Diego previously compared starring in the science fiction franchise to being in love, saying 'when you stop looking for it, it comes to you'
The 36-year-old said: 'I saw this British number calling me at 2 am, and I have family in England, so I thought it was, like, a drunken cousin from a bar or something.
'I ran over and saw that it was [director] Gareth Edwards wanting to give me some news! I just jumped around like crazy.'
He added: 'It was quite a special day. [Edwards] said, 'Okay, welcome to Star Wars.''
Not a drunk dial! The actor confessed to People magazine that he almost screened the call from the movie's director Gareth Edwards to offer him the role of Captain Cassian Andor
However, the father-of-two's excitement was slightly curtailed as he was forced to keep the major accomplishment a secret for a long time from just about everyone, including his children, Fiona, six, and Jerónimo, eight.
The actor said: 'I didn’t trust my children to keep the secret because, well, they’re kids! I told them we were spending the summer in England, but I couldn’t tell them why for quite a long time.'
Diego obviously took the big news very seriously.

The accomplished artist was completely surprised by the opportunity.
Asked if he ever thought he would star in such a big movie, the producer, director and writer said: 'No, never. The best things that have come to me in life have been a surprise.
'I think it's because I have kept working, even in something else, and not because of waiting for it. I just think that when you focus your energy in the right direction things start to work out and life surprises you in a positive way.'
Almost showtime! Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit theaters on December 16 in the US and Japan
Comparing landing the role to falling in love, he added: 'Maybe I'm being too romantic, but it's impossible to travel somewhere looking to fall in love with someone.
'Instead, when you stop looking for it, it comes to you and soon you are in love. If I didn't have a movie right now I would be very happy doing theater.'
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will open in selection countries on December 14 and all over the US on December 16.
