A heartbroken friend was stabbed to death at a memorial party which was held in honour of another man who was killed 24 hours earlier.

In the first incident, Martin Maughan, 27, was found with a knife wound at a home in West Walk, Sneinton, Nottingham, at 6am on Saturday and died shortly after.

Today, residents in nearby Mill View Close told how a second victim, named locally as Junior Fuller, 38, was killed in the early hours of this morning while holding a party to celebrate the first victim's life.

Neighbours said he was knifed three times after somebody at the party stole his phone. Mr Fuller was stabbed after giving chase. The two murder scenes are just half a mile apart.

Nottinghamshire police are running separate murder inquiries in relation to the two incidents.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of Mr Maughan's murder.

Detectives have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in relation to that incident.

Figures show the force has recorded almost 300 knife crimes in the past year.

Writing on Facebook, Martin's mum Kathleen said: 'Today I had a fone call that broke my heart in two, asking me did I hear the news that my son fell to his knees.

'I begged god for mercy not to take my Martin away, but he didn't listen he's gone where all the Angels are in that kingdom in the sky.

'Please lord watch out for my boy put your arms around my Mart hold him as tight as you can.

'I no hes looking down on us from that kingdom in the sky.
