Declaring your love is a major milestone in any relationship, and yet putting your heart on the line can all too often end in disaster.

Thousands of singletons have revealed the brutal responses they received after saying 'I love you' to their crush - with many of their responses going down like a ton of bricks

Reddit user Back2Bach told how he object of his affections had replied with the words: 'Thank you for letting me know' - before promptly changing the subject.

While one of the more cringeworthy anecdotes came from anonymous Redditor JPJ9, whose crush simply replied: 'VERY GOOD.'

One romantic hopeful recalled a story from his grandmother's youth, when one of her classmates told her that 'he was starting to have feelings for her and all that'.

After her searingly honest response - 'that's unfortunate' - he quickly realised his feelings were not reciprocated.

However it wasn't all bad, with the pair still remaining friends years later according to JPJ9.

Fellow Redditors commented that they had received the exact same response, and that it 'hurts'.

While Zlurpo revealed that for him, even worse than rejection was getting no response at all - only a notification saying 'Message seen at 12:42'.

Eltigredelnorte admitted they were left in pieces after being told: 'I know, I heard you the first time' while Bella Blindeye claimed that getting the response 'no you don't' was equally painful.

Social media user Snkifador recalled a cringeworthy ordeal that had happened to him recently, saying: 'Was at my crush's place the other day and when I left I told her I liked her as we looked at each other outside her door.

'She looked to the side and gave me body language for "alright, you can get going now."'

And proving that pictures can speak louder than words, type40darsit told how  his crush had 'used the Facebook messenger sticker of the red power ranger giving a thumbs up.'

One man replied: 'Love doesn't exist, it's purely a chemical reaction who's sole purpose is to get us to pass on our genetic material so that our species' existence can continue to exist'

One Redditor told how his romantic interest had simply replied: 'No. No no no. No no no no no. No. Nononononono. No. No.'

Perhaps the most toe-curling response came from Salt_Mines, whose crush told her: 'Love doesn't exist, it's purely a chemical reaction who's sole purpose is to get us to pass on our genetic material so that our species' existence can continue to exist.

'So, while, yes, I could say "I love you", back, with this knowledge I am incapable of doing so with sincerity due my enlightened state."'
