Astronauts and gorillas, avocado and facepalms arrive on the iPhone: Apple releases iOS 10.2 - complete with 72 new emoji

After much anticipation, Apple today released it's iOS 10.2 software update  - with 72 new emoji.

The new list includes a face-palm, the long-anticipated avocado and a range of different career emoji that can be selected as either male or female.

There are 72 new emoji included in the update, which were approved by the Unicode Consortium back in June 2016, as part of the Unicode 9.0 update.

One of the biggest changes that comes with iOS 10.2 is to the popular emoji keyboard, with the introduction of more than 70 new characters. The list includes a range of different career emoji that can be selected as either male or female

Several new hand images have been introduced, including a 'fingers crossed' emoji, and 'face-palm' character. 

New career emoji include a firefighter, welder, astronaut and even rockstar – all of which can be selected as male or female and in a range of races. 

A range of new animals has been added, including a fox, duck, squid and gorilla. A new creepy clown emoji can also now be used.

Several new hand images have been introduced, including a 'fingers crossed' emoji, and 'face-palm' character.

New career emoji include a firefighter, welder, astronaut and even rock star – all of which can be selected as male or female and in a range of races.

The long-standing red-dress dancing woman has also been joined by a male equivalent, wearing a blue suit while pulling disco moves.

A range of new animals has been added, including a fox, duck, squid and gorilla.

And fittingly for the current 'killer clown' craze, a new creepy clown emoji can now be used.

While the delivery date is still expected to be mid-November, registered developers were given access to the Beta version today

Fans of the fruit will be pleased to hear that an avocado emoji is finally being introduced in iOS 10.2

The new update will also include more emotion filled icons that will let users share their feelings without typing a single word.

A black heart has also been added that can be shared with ex-lovers or when you’re feeling cold-hearted. Users can also use a selfie taking emoji, call a friend out for lying and even let friends know that you and your partner are expecting with a pregnant emoji

In addition to new people and animals, users will see new food icons such as a tub of honey, paella and a pita sandwich 

These include the 'feeling sick' face, the 'fingers crossed' emoji and there is also a fist-bump emoji.

A black heart has also been added that can be shared with ex-lovers or when you’re feeling cold-hearted.

There is also a selfie taking emoji, a new icon that calls a friend out for lying and another is a pregnant emoji to tell friends you and your partner are expecting.

In addition to all the new and exciting emoji, Apple has also updated the appearance of all remaining icons that were not changed in the last revision, such as the the cars, trucks, bikes and airplanes 

While little else is known about iOS 10.2, the iOS 10.1 software recently came out which includes a vital tweak to the iPhone 7 Plus handset's camera.

The update adds a new Portrait Mode that blurs the background around whatever the user is snapping, to make it stand out more.
