Sergio Aguero has been given a week off by Pep Guardiola to recuperate as he serves a four-match ban.

The Manchester City striker is not available until December 31 after his horror tackle on Chelsea’s David Luiz last week.

Guardiola allowed Aguero extended time off, with the Argentine expected to return later this week.

The manager is understood to have viewed Aguero’s enforced absence from first-team duty as an opportunity to recharge his batteries.

Aguero has played 19 times for club and country already this season, despite having also been suspended in early September. Guardiola maintained last week that his leading is not overly aggressive.

He has 16 goals to his name this term, although has only scored five in his last 13 matches.

Aguero did not travel down to Leicester for the weekend defeat against Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes and has not been required to report for training.

It is anticipated that the 28-year-old will train normally thereafter, with the Christmas period drawing near. His return is set for the crunch fixture at Liverpool on New Year’s Eve.
