The award is a strong endorsement for Margot, who is set to star in her own standalone Harley Quinn movie as part of the ongoing DC Comics Universe.

Margot's acclaimed performance was a highlight of an otherwise critically savaged film and proved a boost for that film's publicity.

The comic book film - featuring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne - was criticised for 'appalling sexism and hideously timed gun worship'.

The widely panned film was dubbed 'mundane' and 'predictable,' while one reviewer warned that it 'isn't even the good kind of bad'.

Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson wrote: 'Suicide Squad is bad. Not fun bad. Not redeemable bad.

Not happy: Not everyone enjoyed Margot's performance with one critic saying she was the 'embodiment of all the conflicting things, this frankly disastrous movie... is attempting to do'

'Not the kind of bad that is the unfortunate result of artists honorably striving for something ambitious and falling short.'

Meanwhile, despite her much-admired performance at the Critics' Choice Award, BuzzFeed's Alison Willmore had a different take on Margot's role in the film.

Alison focused on the films use of women, suggesting: 'The women can't control themselves and they're always dragging down the men around them.'

Meanwhile, Margot made headlines when rumours emerged the blonde beauty had packed her things in her home in the UK to move to Los Angeles with her partner.
