'Remember her long career as an international model? Me neither': Rita Ora divides fan opinion as she takes over from Tyra Banks on America's Next Top Model

On Monday night, she stepped into the experienced shoes of Tyra Banks as the new host of America's Next Top Model.

But Rita Ora's performance on the U.S. TV show has divided fans, with many of them taking to Twitter to complain about the singer's lack of experience in the modelling world.

'Remember Rita Ora's long and established career as an international model? Ya, me neither,' wrote fan Zelly Lodin on the social media site.

Divisive: Rita Ora's performance as the new host of America's Next Top Model has divided fans

'This ANTM is a joke. Rita Ora isn't even a model,' wrote another fan, while a second viewer questioned if Rita could discover a star model on the show.

'Tyra Banks couldn't even produce a top model w(ith) a consistent career, but they expect Rita Ora to?' they wrote.

Another bemused viewer wanted to know exactly how many of the potential models 'knew' who Rita was.

The 26-year-old will be hoping her new role raises her profile in the U.S. - she has made some slight inroads into the market with her recent appearance as Mia Grey in the Fifty Shades movie franchise.

She also scored a number three slot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with her appearance on Iggy Azalea single Black Widow.

Taking the plunge: Rita ensured she was very much the fashionista on the hit show

Mixed reviews: Many fans were unimpressed with Rita's performance, citing her inexperience as a model on Twitter

Meanwhile, other fans were more complimentary. Some wrote how much they loved Rita as host, with one comment drawing a response from the star.

'Rita Ora, you're doing a great job,' fan Carlos tweeted.

'Awww, thank you my love. Glad you're loving it,' Rita responded.

Rita is alternatively described as 'perfect' for the job and a 'good choice' for the panel, with one viewer agreeing that it was better Rita hosted the show rather than a 'fake a**' model'.

Perfect: Some fans loved Rita's performance on the show, declaring her the right woman for the job

Big debut: Rita appeared in a variety of ensembles on the first episode

We want Tyra back: Some fans called for the return of the veteran model

But a cluster of viewers called for the return of Tyra, who stepped down after 22 'cycles' of the show and now serves as an executive producer.

'Just wish @Tyra Banks is still the host,' one fan wrote. 'I'm confused as to why Rita Ora is now the HOST.'

'How are you going to replace Tyra Banks with Rita Ora?' another fan asked.

What does Rita Ora know about modelling? Many fans questioned whether the singer's experience qualified her to present the show

However, according to Rita, hosting the show isn't about filling Tyra's shoes.

'[Tyra] is so supportive. She is the queen,' Rita told Entertainment Tonight.  'This was never filling anyone's shoes - this was a taking her legacy and really making it our own with a new panel.

'I wanted to really find a superstar. I think we all do - somebody that can really compete in this industry in the world we live in and with social media, just being a superstar in all boundaries,' she added.

Big shoes to fill: Rita says she intends to make the show her own

Dream come true: Rita said she's been watching the show since she was 12-years-old

A little iffy: Some fans have yet to make up their minds on how the ANTM new season will unfold

And for Rita, hosting the show is something of a dream come true.

'I think I was 12 or something when I first noticed [the show] and I've just been so obsessed with it, she told CNN. 'So now to kind of host the show and be show host is such a great experience and such an honour.'

Luckily Tyra had some advice to pass on.

'The advice I got was, you have to really stand your grand and put these girls through the reality of it, which is no sugar coating,' she said. 'It's showing the girls that it's very difficult to be the best.'

We want experience: Some fans called for a more seasoned model to be in charge of the show
