India v England fourth Test day three RECAP: Virat Kohli century punishes tourists and gives hosts 51-run lead

  • India end day three on 451 for 7 to set up a winning position in the fourth Test
  • Virat Kohli hit a sublime 147 to move India 51 runs in front of England
  • Hosts have three first-innings wickets remaining going into day four
  • Jayant Yadav (30) was unbeaten at close of play alongside his captain
  • England fought back but frustrated by 87-run partnership for eighth wicket
  • Earlier Murali Vijay (136) hit his second century of the series for the hosts
  • Jake Ball had bowled Cheteshwar Pujara with the second ball of the day
  • England need to win in Mumbai to have any hope of squaring the series
  • LAST WICKET:  Jadeja c Buttler b Rashid 25, India 364 for 7
  • DAY THREE REPORT: India frustrate England and take first-innings lead

India moved into a potentially match-winning position at the end of day three thanks largely to another terrific ton from captain Virat Kohli.

He shared an 86-run partnership with Jayant Yadav for the eighth wicket as the hosts moved 51 runs ahead with three first-innings wickets intact.

Kohli, who reached stumps unbeaten on 147, was one of two centurions for India, after Murali Vijay hit a fine 136 earlier in the day.

England toiled in the Mumbai heat, with Alastair Cook's selection of two spinners leaving his side short of wicket-taking options.

India had looked in a commanding position at lunch, but lost centurion Murali Vijay as he was caught and bowled by Adil Rashid for 136, ending a 116-run stand with Kohli.

Part-time spinner Joe Root took two wickets in two overs after Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali had struck in the first hour after lunch to leave the hosts at a precarious 348 for six at tea.

England had got off to the perfect start when Jake Ball bowled Cheteshwar Pujara with just the second ball of the day.

With England 2-0 down all hopes of winning the series are gone, but Cook and Co are looking to hit back here as they aim to square it at 2-2.

That's a wrap

Well that was pretty chastening in the end. England a little toothless and ragged by the close of play. Once again, in the tight moments that define Test matches India prevailed. It's been a theme of the series out here.

England worked themselves into a decent position in the afternoon session, but that final partnership has really put India on the front foot.

Alastair Cook may have a lot of questions to answer; tactics, team selection, lack of bowling rotation, and failing to take the second new ball until the first was over 130 overs old.

If that hasn't put you off then please join me tomorrow morning. I will be thankful of the company! Or at least just to watch the majestic Virat Kohli steer his way to a double ton.

Bye for now.

DAY THREE REPORT

PAUL NEWMAN: Virat Kohli jumped for joy and punched the air with a delight befitting the animated approach he has brought throughout his mission of beating England into the ground here and avenging three, long series of hurt.

For the India captain the outcome of this tour has appeared personal and the manner with which he soaked up the acclaim of the biggest crowd seen in four Tests so far as he reached his 15th Test century proved it.

India, at least under MS Dhoni, always appeared resigned to losing Test series in England but coming second best in their own country and in their own conditions, as they did in 2012, was a different matter – at least to Kohli.

The man who succeeded Dhoni has been the biggest reason why India are unbeaten in 17 home Tests since they lost decisively to Alastair Cook’s England in Kolkata four years ago and here he went a long way towards making it 18.

For one tantalising spell of the third day of this fourth Test England were very much in this contest and looked certain of gaining the first innings lead that seemed integral to their hopes of the win they desperately need.

Kohli clearly had other ideas and the man who has bestrode this series like the colossus of Indian cricket he has become wrestled the initiative away from them to the delight of almost 40,000 adoring supporters.

CLOSE OF PLAY - INDIA 451-7

Joe Root replaces Adil Rashid for the final over of day three. Virat Kohli on strike. Would offer a hugely different complexion on the day if he can snare him.

Onto the back foot, punched through extra cover for a single. Three balls remaining for Jayant to negotiate. Which he does.

10:59
141 overs: India 450-7

Struggling for any optimism here from an English point of view. Think they may struggle to get to a fifth day here, the way this pitch is spinning and how much better their spinners are.

Maiden over, we have one left.

10:56
140 overs: India 450-7 (Lead by 50)

Rashid continues, and continues to struggle. The lead goes to 50. The partnership, potentially match-winning, to 87.

10:53
139 overs: India 446-7

Big shout for a caught behind off Jayant. Not out. Big spike on ultra edge. No reviews left for Alastair Cook. Wasted one just before. Sums it up really.

10:48
138 overs: India 445-7

England's team selection really coming under question now. Moeen and Rashid are knackered. They have no control now. And Cook can't trust his seamers to bowl more than small spurts, with so little assistance for them.

Kohli smacks Rashid down the ground for four. He moves past 2000 Test runs as captain, and his average has just sneaked past 50 as well.

10:44
137 overs: India 440-7

Single for Kohli takes him to 138, and Jayant ends the over with a handsome drive. This partnership is worth 76 and England really are toiling now.

10:41
136 overs: India 435-7

And now Adil Rashid into the attack, driven for four by Jayant who has played his way in. India looking good for a very healthy lead now.

Six more added to the total.

10:37
135 overs: India 429-7

Moeen into the attack, inside edge past the wicketkeeper and it trickles away to the fence. Seven more to the total,  Jayant moves onto 19.

10:34
134 overs: India 422-7

Another single from the over. England beginning to struggle. Jayant defiant, 12 from 55 balls faced.

10:30
133 overs: India 421-7

Woakes continues and plenty of strike rotation, four runs from it. The lead stretches to 21.

10:25
132 overs: India 417-7

Kohli at it again. A glorious clip to the square leg boundary brings him four more. Steers another aerially towards the third man boundary but fielder stops it reaching the fence.

10:22
REVIEW - Not Out

Close to the outside edge again from Anderson, Alastair Cook has decided to review. They think Jayant got a feather on it. Nothing on ultra edge, he's nowhere near it. That is a terrible review, and the sign of a team mentally worn out.

10:20
131 overs: India 411-7

Chris Woakes takes the new ball with Jimmy Anderson. Big inside edge onto the pad from Kohli. Next ball skips down the leg side.

Strong drive down the ground, four more to the India captain. Another two through the leg side.

10:15
130 overs: India 405-7

Jimmy Anderson comes into bowl. Still no new ball taken by Alastair Cook.

And here it is, two balls into the over. Kohli's eyes light up. Harder ball will fly off the bat, England hope it will just do more through the air and off the surface.

Kohli clips a single off his pads. Jayant edges into the slip cordon and it's dropped by Joe Root. It absolutely flew into the slip region, but once again chance shelled. Too many of those for England.

10:09
129 overs: India 404-7 (INDIA TAKE THE LEAD)

And Kohli takes India into the lead, clipping Moeen into the leg side. Another single and Jayant steers Moeen for two more.

10:02
DRINKS - 128 overs: India 399-7

Four byes, huge turn deceives everyone. Then four more clipped into the leg side. Kohli going after Rashid now. He looks tired and is bowling more loose balls now.

Edge from Kohli, they run three and the deficit is now one run.

09:59
127 overs: India 388-7

Into the leg side from Kohli and he gets a single. Jayant stays patient and just that single is it for the over.

09:56
126 overs: India 387-7

Jayant occupying the crease and hasn't looked in too much trouble. Doesn't get to the pitch with his front foot, edges and wide of Stokes at slip. He does well to stop it.

09:53
125 overs: India 387-7

Just that one expensive over for Chris Woakes. Moeen Ali is back into the attack. Kohli opens the face, drives for two.

09:49
124 overs: India 385-7

Nicely bowled by Rashid, one that drifts past the outside edge. Lots of turn for him still. Maiden over.

09:46
123 overs: India 385-7

Chris Woakes (remember him?) is in to bowl for the first time today. He hasn't bowled for 23 hours!

Kohli takes a single, Jayant now to face Woakes. Solid in defence. Nicely punched down the ground, Rashid saves one and they run three.

Bouncer from Woakes to end the over, but no. Wide is called on it. Kohli makes full use of that extra ball and smacks it behind square for four.

09:40
122 overs: India 376-7

Two balls remaining in the over for Rashid. It's a maiden.

09:37
REVIEW - Not Out

Shout for lbw against Jayant Yadav, not out for the umpire but they are reviewing. Pad first according to the replay, ball tracking now... spinning away and missing the wickets. Tight call, but correct one from the umpire. England miss out.

09:35
121 overs: India 376-7 (KOHLI HUNDRED)

So many spectators on their feet, their camera phones out, waiting for Kohli's 100th run here. Chanting  his name. He gets it! Misfield in the covers and he gets there. Super knock, and a super celebration to boot. His 15th in Test match cricket.

Wide from Ball and Kohli smashes the ball away for four through the covers. India closing in on that first-innings total and an all-important lead.

09:30
120 overs: India 369-7

Kohli on 98 and on strike to Rashid. Huge anticipation in the crowd now. Into the leg side, but he must settle for one. Now the new man Jayant is in the spinner's sights.

Onto the back foot and he finds the gap through the covers, they run two and he's off the mark.

09:26
119 overs: India 366-7

Jayant Yadav is the new man. He's already scored some useful runs in this series. Jake Ball bowling it into the right handers and getting a fair bit of movement now.

Probing stuff from Ball, targeting the toes as well as the outside edge. Plenty of movement for him, bot quite enough pace. Maiden.

09:22
KP not impressed
09:22
118 overs: India 366-7

One more ball in the over for Rashid, the batsmen crossed so Virat Kohli stays on strike. He punches through the on side and moves to 98.

09:19
WICKET! Jadeja c Buttler b Rashid 25

Now onto 96 with a single pushed through the covers. Jadeja, up in the air! Taken! He'd had enough of being patient, looking to whack straight down the ground but straight in the air it went. Clever from Rashid, give it a little more flight. Crucial breakthrough.

09:17
117 overs: India 363-3

Ball continues, worked into the leg side by Jadeja for one. Full toss gifts a single for Kohli. He moves to 95 and keeps strike against Rashid. Watch him go now...

09:13
116 overs: India 361-6

Kohli moves into the 90s and brings up the fifty partnership. Cuts Rashid again and it runs to the fence. Rashid tiring and dropping short. India creeping up towards England's first innings total of 400.

09:10
115 overs: India 355-6

Jake Ball also continues and there is some movement for him outside off stump. It's a maiden against the left hander. Cook will be keen to keep the run rate down as he attacks with spin from one end.

09:05
114 overs: India 355-6

Rashid continues after tea. Almost another sharp catch for Jennings at short leg off Jadeja, hit firmly, he gets his left hand to it but it slips out. Did well to get even that on the ball.

Kohli flicks away and moves to 84. The 350 comes up, the deficit stands at 50. Jadeja pushes for one into the off side.

And short ball from Rashid is smacked by Kohli along the ground for four.

08:43
TEA REPORT

PAUL NEWMAN: England hit back in the most unexpected fashion on the third day of the fourth Test when their spinners took four wickets between them to give them a chance of a precious first innings lead.

The unlikely figure of Joe Root took two wickets in two overs with his part-time off-spin after seemingly bringing himself on to bowl while captain Alastair Cook was off the field for two overs.

And with Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali bowling better than they had done at any point in the Test to take a wicket apiece, India were reduced to 348 for six by tea, still 52 behind.

A big crowd at the Wankhede Stadium saw the most compelling contest as England, who appeared to be letting their advantage slip away, suddenly hauled themselves back into a contest they simply must win.

Rashid, who had suffered in comparison with India’s spinners on the second day, began the comeback with a full toss that someohow centurion Murali Vijay struck straight back at him. Rashid juggled the opportunity but snatched it at the second attempt.

Then Moeen got in on the act when Karun Nair, who had lived dangerously, initially survived a shout for lbw when Bruce Oxenford turned down England’s appeals. Jonny Bairstow implored his captain Alastair Cook to review the decision and he was proved correct when replays showed the ball cannoning into the stumps.

But it was the introduction of Root that really did the trick for England. First he snared Parthiv Patel, who had criticised the England spin attack at the end of the second day, with his fourth ball and then saw Ravi Ashwin well caught by debutant Keaton Jennings at short leg.

So dumbstruck was Ashwin at his misfortune that he claimed the ball had hit Jennings helmet before he pouched it, a claim the umpires dismissed with the help of television evidence.

If Rashid had managed to hang on to a sharp return chance offered by Virat Kohli on 68 England really would have been in business but the Indian captain, who passed 4,000 Test runs, is still there as a constant thorn in England’s side.

Earlier Vijay reached a century as India poured misery onto England here this morning and appeared to put their first innings 400 into stark context.

It was all too easy for the India batsmen in the first session even though England got off to the perfect start on the third day when Jake Ball bowled Cheteshwar Pujara with just the second ball of the day.

Yet that was to prove a false dawn for England as it sparked the entrance of India captain Kohli who joined forces with Vijay to score runs with ease.

At lunch the pair had added 101 for the third wicket and even though India, at 247 for two, are still 153 behind England the warning signs were already there that this could be a long, hot day of despair for England.

Even when it looked as though Rashid had made a breakthrough by trapping Vijay lbw on 116 the Indian batsman was reprieved by technology when it emerged that he had got the thinnest of inside edges onto pad.

That despair turned to joy in the middle session but England cannot afford to concede much of a lead here with the certain knowledge that India’s spinners will again pose a huge threat in the second innings.

08:42
TEA: India 348-6

One over left and we're going to have a bit of Jake Ball. A hint of reverse swing as the first delivery raps the back pad, sliding down leg.

Jadeja pushes a single to third man. That's over, and that's tea. Four wickets for 101 runs, England have fought back well but must keep going. This pair could still take it away from them.

08:36
112 overs: India 346-6

Rashid into his 33rd over now. Jadeja and Kohli eyeing tea now. That break is about five minutes away now. Two from the over.

08:32
111 overs: India 344-6

Moeen replaces Root, he goes short and Jadeja pulls him for four along the ground. Single through the on side.

Appeal for lbw against Kohli, possibly an inside edge. Half-shout more than anything. Down the ground for another single.

08:27
110 overs: India 337-6

Full from Rashid and Jadeja drives for a single through extra cover. Kohli pushes and claims another one run. Jadeja wants a quick single but is sent back after driving to mid off.

Jadeja keeps following the ball that drifts past his pads. Tucks into one that's a little short.

08:24
109 overs: India 334-6

Root in for over No 4. Kohli on strike on 77...

Full toss, Kohli miscues it and it's just a single. He knows he missed out. Jadeja drives and they run one.

Another couple, four from it.

08:20
108 overs: India 330-6

Kohli sweeps, it goes fine off the toe end of the bat and he moves to 76 with another four.

Jadeja has his cap on for the spinners. Old school. Kohli with a single, Jadeja blocks with bat and pad. One then turns past his pads, and again.

08:16
107 overs: India 325-6

Short from Root and Jadeja smashes Root for six. These two are intent on counter-punching now, they're not interested in blocking. Pitch is spitting and turning, this could be a fun half-hour up until tea.

Oooh. Turn and bounce, just past the outside edge. Claim for a catch at slip but it did miss the bat.

08:13
106 overs: India 319-6

Rashid and Root the combination now. Rashid stays round the wicket and is swept to the square leg boundary by Virat Kohli for four.

Oooh is that a drop? Kohli goes straight down the ground, and it is dropped! Big chance, should be taken down to his left hand side... next ball turns square past the outside edge.

Short ball clubbed for four. He's on the charge...

08:10
105 overs: India 311-6

The left handed Ravindra Jadeja is in. Full again from Root, Jadeja smacks it over his head for four.

PAUL NEWMAN: Yes Ravi Ashwin is due a failure with the bat and Joe Root has done it again! Well, well, what a twist we have here! It is the occasional spin of Joe Root that has twice done the trick and four wickets have fallen in the session. England are back in this now. This is brilliant Test cricket again! But Virat Kohli is still there and Ravi Jadeja is a decent batsman as we saw in Mohali. If India get any sort of lead you'd still fancy them here because we know their spinners are going to bowl better than England's in the second innings.

08:07
WICKET! Ashwin c Jennings b Root 0

Cook is back on the field but Root continues.

GONE! Joe Root has another! Ashwin looks to work him into the on side, hits it firmly but straight into the lap of Keaton Jennings who takes it. Joe Root making it sing out there!

08:04
104 overs: India 307-5

Rashid going round the wicket to Virat Kohli now, who works him for two through the leg side. Attempts a drive down the ground but Rashid gets down low to stop it. Kohli tries to get away when Rashid drops short but can't beat the infield, and berates himself for missing out.

08:02
View from Mumbai

PAUL NEWMAN: Well, the cricketing gods have done for Parthiv Patel there! He has a very low opinion of Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid but he didn't say what he thought about Joe Root's off-spin! It has done for him and if Root did bring himself on there while Alastair Cook was off the field then it was an inspired move. Moeen was just struggling to get the ball in the right place to Patel there but Root immediately did so. Ravi Ashwin is due a failure with the bat, isn't he??

08:01
103 overs: India 305-5

Inspired vice-captaincy from Joe Root, and a great piece of working out too. He'd seen how Parthiv was looking to get forward to the pitch of the ball. Bowled it fuller and drew him out.

Ravichandran Ashwin is the new man in, he's having an excellent series not just with the ball but the bat too.

Wicket-maiden for Root, not a bad bowling change...

07:58
WICKET! Parthiv c Bairstow b Root 15

Alastair Cook is off the field, and Joe Root takes the executive decision to introduce himself to the attack!

He's giving the ball a lot of air to try and tempt the false shot. GOT HIM! Full, gets him coming forward, wafty drive, edge, taken by Bairstow at the second attempt!

07:56
102 overs: India 305-4

Parthiv cuts again, they run one. Kohli nudges another single into the leg side. Parthiv Patel growing in confidence, bust at the crease, and cuts again for two more. Single to end the over. India more positive in their approach since the drinks break.

07:52
101 overs: India 300-4

Short from Moeen, Parthiv picks the length well here and with a step back pulls the ball for four along the ground. Back foot again, cuts and they run a quick single to bring up the 300. The deficit now stands at 100.

07:49
100 overs: India 294-4

Still no new ball as Rashid begins the 100th over of India's first innings. Loose, and Kohli smacks it for four square of the wicket.

Next ball is driven through extra cover, they run one. The left-handed Parthiv follows suit and it's two runs. Parthiv is itching around at the crease, not entirely convincing in his pick of the length. Kohli just tells him to smack the ball.

07:42
DRINKS: India 287-4

Just 39 runs in the 15 overs since lunch. Which is remarkable, really, given how freely India played in the morning. A single through the leg side for Kohli, and that takes him 2400 international runs in 2016 - one more than Joe Root.

Drinks.

07:39
98 overs: India 286-4

Shout for a catch off Rashid's first ball, ball turning and taken at leg slip but it hit the thigh pad. Parthiv works a single to mid on.

Kohli cuts through the off side for another single. England have been much better at stopping the flow of runs since lunch. Lays bare how poor that opening session was from the fielding side.

07:36
97 overs: India 284-4

Good over from Moeen, Parthiv nabs a single with a push into the off side that falls just wide of Jennings under the helmet.

07:33
96 overs: India 283-4

Another single for Kohli, he moves to 53. His importance laid bare now as England make their way through the Indian lineup.

Parthiv with a single down the ground as Root can't quite get there.

07:31
Parthiv on England's spinners...

‘You could see how they bowled in the third Test in Mohali when we were batting second. They actually got exposed because there was no help in the pitch.

'We don’t have to go over the top or try to play a sweep or a reverse-sweep because we know there might be a bad ball coming.’

Full story here

07:29
View from Mumbai

PAUL NEWMAN: After an eternity while the stand-in TV umpire finally decides that Karun Nair hasn't touched that, Moeen Ali has a wicket and England's spinners are enjoying their best spell of the Test here.

They are both bowling well! Hallelujah! Game on? Not yet. Not while Virat Kohli is still there. but some hope for England. And here's Parthiv Patel who delivered a damning assessment of the quality of England's spinners last night. Can he back up his words now?

07:29
95 overs: India 281-4

Parthiv Patel the new man in, unconvincing shot first up, loops off outside edge but lands just beyond the reach of Ben Stokes. Kohli plays into the on side for one and Parthiv survives the rest of the over.

07:21
REVIEW - OUT! Karun lbw b Moeen 13

Moeen, good shout this for lbw against Karun. Umpire shakes his head but Cook reviews. What does ultra edge show? The bat is next to the ball, but I don't think he's hit that. It's very tight.

Third umpire is taking a long old time over this. He decides, after an age, it's pad first. Ball tracking, in line, turning in and England have another breakthrough!

07:21
94 overs: India 279-3

Rashid continues to Karun. He drives into the off side for a single. Rashid drops short, it spins wide, inside edge from Kohli and it hits his pad on its way to hitting the stumps. Close one.

07:17
93 overs: India 278-3

Kohli grabs a single on the on side, brings Karun on strike to Moeen. Reverse sweep, fine strike and he moves to double figures. Single brings Kohli back on strike.

Moeen, incidentally, into three figures off his 33 overs now...

07:13
92 overs: India 272-3

Rashid continues with Karun in his sights. Gets one to straighten, big shout for lbw but there's an inside edge. He scrambles two into the leg side, Stokes' laser-arm throw creates a run out opportunity but he made his ground.

Final ball is edged, but soft hands keep it down.

07:09
91 overs: India 270-3 (KOHLI FIFTY)

Misfield from Buttler brings Virat Kohli to another, inevitable, fifty. His 15th in Tests.

Karun sweeps, hits the toe end and it squirms past the fielder at midwicket.

07:06
90 overs: India 268-3

With a new man at the crease and Kohli still rebuilding after lunch, this is surely the moment to take the new ball?

Rashid fizzes one in, stays low and Kohli just gets his bat on it. Straighter and worked to midwicket, moves him to 49 and brings Karun on strike.

Lovely ball to the new man, spins outside leg and past the outside edge. And another one. And again! Superb stuff from Rashid.

07:03
89 overs: India 267-3

Moeen to Kohli, who takes no risks as India look to start again, but he works a single from the final ball to keep strike to Rashid.

07:00
88 overs: India 266-3

Rashid has been better today, but it was one of his loose deliveries that claimed the wicket. Karun Nair now into the attack and England will sense an opportunity.

Bad ball to end the over, dropped short and Nair pulls through square leg. Early Christmas present to get off the mark.

06:57
WICKET! Vijay c and b Rashid 136

Rashid is looking far more threatening of the two spinners out there now.

GONE! A low full toss is hammered back at Rashid by Vijay and he takes the catch low down! Vijay has to drag himself off the crease, a really soft dismissal but a huge boost for England.

06:55
87 overs: India 260-2

Vijay moves to the pitch of the ball from Moeen and drills it along the ground for four. Another ball flicked through midwicket for a single. They rotate the strike for another few singles and the scoreboard moves along.

06:52
86 overs: India 253-2

Rashid floating it up to Kohli, he drives for a single through the covers. Vijay edges, into the ground and wide of Stokes at first slip. Then a beauty that beats Kohli, good spin, flashes past the outside edge. Good over from Rashid.

06:49
85 overs: India 251-2

Bit short from Moeen and Vijay strikes him through the on side for a couple. The 250 is brought up as Vijay hits another through the leg side. Kohli follows suit.

Four from the over.

06:46
84 overs: India 247-2

Kohli on strike. Plenty of turn for the leg-spinner but Kohli is untroubled. Maiden over.

06:44
Play to resume

No new ball yet... Adil Rashid continues.

06:07
Lunch Report

PAUL NEWMAN: Murali Vijay reached a century as India poured misery onto England here this morning and put their first innings 400 into stark context.

It was all too easy for the India batsmen even though England got off to the perfect start on the third day when Jake Ball bowled Cheteshwar Pujara with just the second ball of the day.

Yet that was to prove a false dawn for England as it sparked the entrance of India captain Virat Kohli who joined forces with Vijay to score runs at ease.

At lunch the pair had added 101 for the third wicket and even though India, at 247 for two, are still 153 behind England the warning signs are already there that this could be a long, hot day of despair for England.

Even when it looked as though Adil Rashid had made a breakthrough by trapping Vijay lbw on 116 the Indian batsman was reprieved by technology when it emerged that he had got the thinnest of inside edges onto pad.

There was little that England captain Alastair Cook could do to stem the tide as he persisted with Moeen Ali unchanged for 10 overs and rotated his seamers at the other end.

That was until Rashid was finally given a chance to atone for his miserable second day performance and Moeen was immediately brought on at the other end to provide a double twit threat.

The trouble for England was that there was all too little threat from the pair whose limitations are being badly exposed in conditions that should suit them.

When the extraordinary Ravi Ashwin and his accomplice Ravi Jadeja were bowling there was menace in every ball but with England’s spinners there was barely any.

If India maintain this rate of progress they will be well ahead of England by the close of the third day and in a position to push for the victory that would give them an unassailable 3-0 lead in this series with just the final Test in Chennai to play.

06:03
LUNCH - India 247-2

Moeen to bowl the final over of the first session. The 100-run partnership is brought up as Vijay angles one down to third man.

That's lunch. Vijay 124, Kohli 44. India's session again.

06:00
82 overs: India 245-2

Rashid continues, possibly the last over before lunch unless he rattles through it.

Vijay plays the wrong line again and gets the inside edge. Works another fine, Ben Stokes with a brilliant effort, a full length dive, to stop the boundary.

Sharp spin, pitching leg and turning past off, just flies past Kohli's outside edge.

05:56
81 overs: India 242-2

The second new ball is available for Alastair Cook but we will probably not see it until after lunch.

Moeen beats the outside edge of Kohli. He then works it through the on side to get off strike.

Reverse sweep brings Vijay another one.

05:53
80 overs: India 240-2

DRS saves India and Vijay there. What a pick-me-up that would have been, 10 minutes from the interval.

And Vijay adds another couple to the total with an angled bat behind square.

05:49
Review - decision overturned

Shout for lbw against Vijay for Rashid, and it's given! He immediately reviews, seems pretty confident he got bat on it first.

Replays indicate it is indeed bat first, and the decision is overturned.

05:48
79 overs: India 238-2

Another bowling change brings Moeen Ali back into the attack. He didn't get much of a rest.

In the air from Vijay, top edge but it drops short of the man in the deep. Just that one run from the over.

05:44
78 overs: India 237-2

While Kohli and Vijay are making this look very easy, England will know that one wicket could change everything. Hard to see it at the moment, but they have to keep believing. One more added to the total from the centurion.

05:41
77 overs: India 236-2

Anderson continues. What a shot from Vijay, full and chipped over the in field for four more. Masterful stuff from Vijay. Short ball is pulled away and they add two more. Tucked away fine this time and another couple added. Expensive over from Anderson, nine from it.

05:36
76 overs: India 227-2

Rashid getting plenty of turn but not a great deal of threat. Another outside edge from Vijay at the end of the over, he keeps the strike as it squirts away for three. Runs flowing again.

05:34
75 overs: India 221-2

Whipped away through midwicket from Kohli and he moves to 4000 Test runs. Vijay with another loose stroke and he edges through the vacant gully region for one.

Kohli then plays and misses at another wide one. Down the ground and he keeps strike with another single.

05:28
74 overs: India 218-2

Yup. Adil Rashid is on. He proved expensive yesterday, will these two go after him again? A single down the ground from Vijay brings Kohli on strike.

Another single, and then a loose shot from Vijay, drawn into playing a shot well outside off but missing.

05:25
73 overs: India 216-2

Anderson continues. Kohli stays in his shell for this over, no run from it and a maiden. Surely time for a change at the other end?

PAUL NEWMAN: A hundred to Murali Vijay and he has played really well for that. It has been a model example of how to play here with the right mixture of defence and attack, always looking to get after the spinners. It has all too comfortable for him really and runs are coming all too easily for India today. Meanwhile Moeen Ali is still bowling. Confused? Well, surely Adil Rashid is worth a try...

05:21
72 overs: India 216-2 (VIJAY CENTURY)

A single for Kohli brings Vijay on strike. And he brings up his eighth Test century with a prod into the off side for one. A stylish innings from the India opener, and his second ton of the series.

05:17
71 overs: India 213-2

Ben Stokes' ineffective spell is over and Jimmy Anderson is belatedly on. Into the leg side from Kohli, he wants two but Vijay leaves it at one.

Vijay works him down the ground for two to move to 99... Anderson makes him wait with two balls remaining. Wide, he drives but straight to the fielder in the covers. And he blocks the final ball.

05:11
70 overs: India 210-2

Moeen continues, which is a surprise. He's bowled non-stop so far today. He must be tiring. Vijay drives for a single, moves to 97.

Kohli works him again for a single in the leg side. Just two from it.

PAUL NEWMAN: I'm very surprised Moeen Ali is still bowling. I know Adil Rashid was poor yesterday but isn't he worth a go to these two right-handers? England made such a great start when Jake Ball took a wicket with the second ball of the day but since then this game and the series has been rushing away from them.

05:07
69 overs: India 208-2

Stokes continues after the break. Kohli on 31 and Vijay on 96. After that early breakthrough it's been very tough for England with these two finding it easy to score.

Short from Stokes, waist high and Kohli pulls in front of square for a stylish four.

05:00
DRINKS: India 204-2

Single from Kohli, Vijay onto 95 and he's eyeing the big shot. Aims a sweep but misses. Tucks one into the off side to move to 96. Another single for the India captain, and then a flat delivery blocked by Vijay. Three from it. Drinks.

04:57
67 overs: India 201-2

Kohli pulls Stokes again, just a single there. Just that one run from it. The flow of runs plugged in the last couple of overs from Alastair Cook.

04:52
66 overs: India 200-2

Moeen continues and Kohli brings up the 200 for India, just that single from it though.

04:49
65 overs: India 199-2

Stokes in again and he's driven back down the ground by Kohli, three runs. Into the on side from Vijay and the fifty partnership is brought up.

Kohli with a pull shot, not a great deal of bounce on the ball, along the ground for one. Vijay again works Stokes into the leg side to move to 95. Kohli follows suit. Stokes expensive this morning.

04:44
64 overs: India 192-2

Moeen does continue, Kohli gets bat in front of the pad and works for him a single through the leg side. Couple more singles and not much happening for the spinner so far.

PAUL NEWMAN: This is painful for Moeen Ali. It really is. I have defended him as an off-spinner and he is the best England have but in these conditions against these players he is struggling. England just do not have the spinners to cope here.

It is not a problem in any other part of the world apart from the sub-continent but it is a poor reflection on the English game and it also makes you realise just how good Graeme Swann was. And Monty Panesar before he lost direction. And they were both produced by Northants. Who were subsequently punished for preparing pitches too conducive to spin. Makes you think doesn't it?

04:41
63 overs: India 189-2

35 runs added since the wicket of Pujara fell.

Ben Stokes now replaces Jake Ball. Vijay tuns him into the leg side for two. Then a false shot outside off, Vijay plays and misses the all-rounder. Went for the drive, was a little too wide though.

Driven again, bounces over the sprawling fielder in the covers and they add another two.

Cracking shot this time, Vijay moves to 93 with a four along the ground.

04:37
62 overs: India 181-2

Vijay drives Moeen through extra cover and they run two. Then he sweeps him for a four to square leg. Cracking stroke. And a single to fine leg off his thigh.

Kohli against the spin, but it's fuller from Moeen and driven for four.

04:32
61 overs: India 170-2

Ball getting a lot of bounce off this pitch, but I've not seen either Vijay or Kohli play one so far this morning. Vijay flicks off his pads for a single into the on side.

Kohli drives through cover but excellent fielding from Ben Stokes stops the run.

04:29
60 overs: India 169-2

Maiden for Moeen, Kohli though always in control in that over.

04:26
59 overs: India 169-2

The runs and boundaries are flowing for India this morning. Alastair Cook is attacking, with England still some way ahead with their total of 400.

Another over for Ball, this time there is a third man in place and it's just a single for Kohli.

Just that single from it.

04:22
58 overs: India 168-2

Vijay dances down the track and desposits Moeen for a maximum over the back of his head. Lovely footwork, elegant stroke. Pushed behind square, they run one.

Kohli whips away for one through the on side.

04:19
57 overs: India 160-2

Four more for Kohli, opens the face to Ball and angles the ball to the vacant third man boundary.

And again, bit of bounce but Kohli in control of that shot and he moves to 13. Cook gambling that he'll edge one of these sooner or later

04:15
56 overs: India 152-2

Vijay itching to come down the track to Moeen Ali. He's away into the on side, leg bye given but he got an edge onto his pad there. I'd bring an extra infielder in to him, put the pressure on.

Kohli rotates strike, Vijay blocks final ball.

PAUL NEWMAN: What a start by Jake Ball! That's real encouragement for England and just what they needed. Now, I really hope that they follow it up with many more and that I will look silly this morning when people start reading their Daily Mail and see how terrible England are bowling! But first they have to get through Virat Kohli....

04:12
55 overs: India 150-2

Ball going short to Kohli at this early stage. The India captain not playing game. But he's off the mark with a boundary as Ball slips a little wide and is cut off the back foot for four.

04:09
54 overs: India 146-2

Moeen Ali to start alongside Ball. Murali Vijay is 30 runs away from his ton and blocks first up. Another maiden, Vijay on the back foot mostly in that over.

04:06
53 overs: India 146-2

Big gamble from Alastair Cook to go with Jake Ball first up but it has paid off handsomely. Pujara has been excellent in this series, you just sensed he had the ability to take a winning opportunity away from England today.

That brings Virat Kohli to the crease. Who swerves a few short ones and blocks the final ball.

04:01
WICKET! Pujara b Ball 47

BOWLED HIM! Angled into Pujara, he leaves, and is bowled off his thigh pad. What a start for England from the second ball of the day!

04:01
Play to resume

Jake Ball has the ball in his hand, Pujara the man on strike. Here we go...

04:00
Good morning

PAUL NEWMAN: Good morning from Mumbai where, in theory, England are still very much in this Test. After all, India are still a long way behind and no side have ever lost a Test here after scoring 400 in the first innings.

BUT you just sensed this Test and the series slipping away from England last night. There was just no threat from their spinners where Ravi Ashwin and Ravi Jadeja had plenty. We will have to see a huge improvement from Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali today to stop this from being a painful day for England.
