Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman and Joel Edgerton score Golden Globe nods... with World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge up for three nominations

Australians Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman and Joel Edgerton have been nominated for Golden Globe awards as awards season kicks off in the US.

Hollywood actor Mel, 60, scored a nod for Best Director for his World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge, which retells the emotional story of  based on the true story of conscientious objector Desmond T. Doss.

The film, which recently won a Critics' Choice Award, also scored a nod for Best Picture (Drama) and Best Actor (Andrew Garfield).

Australian actress Nicole, 49, is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Garth Davis-directed drama, Lion.

She plays adoptive mother Sue Brierley in the film about a man adopted by an Australian family at a young age who goes searching for his biological family using Google Earth.

'This nomination is even more emotional and I'm more grateful than ever before. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press!' she said of her 11th Golden Globe nomination.

Actor Joel Edgerton, 42, is nominated for best actor in a film drama for his role in the historical drama Loving, based on the 1967 US Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia.

The Golden Globes recognise excellence in film and television with 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association selecting recipients.

American TV host will officially announce winners during a televised ceremony on January 8. 

Sydney-born star Joel was also recently nominated for Best Actor at the Critics' Choice Awards for the same film.

Mel took home the award for Best Action Movie at awards ceremony held in Los Angeles last week.
