What's up Doc? Suranne Jones shares a laugh with co-stars as she shelters from the rain in a hooded jacket on the set of Doctor Foster season two

It was one of the BBC's most popular new drama series of 2015, leaving fans gagging for more as it reached its explosive finale.

So viewers were overjoyed to learn shortly after season one concluded that Doctor Foster would be back for another run of episodes in 2017.

The new season - which will continue the story of protagonist Gemma Foster (Suranne Jones) after she exposed her cheating husband's affair around the dinner table of his mistress' parents - has been shooting over the course of 2016; but little is known about the precise plot.

However, things look to be taking a turn in which Gemma will have a brush with the law if new on-set images are anything to go by.

Star of the series Suranne has been spotted filming scenes in a car park in London with an actress dressed in a policewoman costume.

The former Coronation Street star, 38, looked in good spirits despite shooting the scenes in the torrential rain.

Suranne was seen bundled up in a large hooded jacket, presumably protecting her from the weather.

It looked like the cast and crew had ceased filming while the rain came down, as Suranne and the policewoman actress were seen to be laughing hysterically - not likely to be a plotline of the notoriously tense drama series.

The actress has been seen multiple times in recent weeks filming scenes for the upcoming series - including one in which she appears to get a parking ticket, and another involving a heated row with unfaithful husband Simon, played by Bertie Carvel.

The cast and crew reunited at the end of the summer to kick off shooting the second instalment - which drew in over 10 million views for its grand finale last September, establishing the show as the biggest new BBC drama of 2015.

When it was announced that they would be making a follow up season, Suranne said of the news: ‘I am thrilled to announce we will all be reunited to tell Gemma's next chapter, and I can't wait for the audience who invested in these characters to find out the explosive twists and turns Mike [Bartlett, the creator] has in store.

‘Now we can look into what happens to a woman after divorce, deceit and revenge has taken its toll. What a gift of a part and a dream to work with Mike Bartlett again!’

The show’s creator, Mike Bartlett, added that he was looking forward to returning to work on betrayed Gemma's life and heartbreak.

‘I've been astounded by the response to Doctor Foster,’ he said in a statement. ‘I'm thrilled that alongside Drama Republic and the phenomenal Suranne Jones, we're now going to tell the next chapter in Gemma's story.

‘Her life in Parminster may look better on the surface, but as she will discover to her cost, every action has its consequences eventually. No one comes through hell unscathed.’

Season one was lauded by the television industry and earned multiple nominations at the National Television Awards 2015.

It's uncertain where the story will go next, given that season one was wrapped up rather neatly at the end - but although Gemma regained her job as a GP and said goodbye to her unfaithful husband, the characters' lives will of course go on.

Many seem to think that there will be a plot twist revolving around Gemma and Simon's custody battle for their young son - something that could turn nasty; and of course Simon's mistress ended the last season pregnant with his child, so that is likely to play a part in things.

The series has been confirmed to feature five episodes, as before, and will likely air in the first half of 2017.

Calm before the storm? Viewers have expressed a desire to see cheating Simon put through more of a punishment for his philandering, with many feeling he got off lightly as season one concluded

It has also been revealed that it will be set two years after the events of the first season, and so won't pick up directly where we last left the story.

Actor Bertie Carvel spoke to Digital Spy about this shortly after season one ended, saying: 'I don't know what kind of comeuppance people are wishing for - whether there's blood and death and castration involved...

'[I don't] think this is a story with a good guy - or girl - and an evil guy. It's a story about recognisable flawed human beings.'

Actress Jodie Comer - who played the other woman, Kate - added: 'What's exciting for me is people will actually get to know Kate as a person.

'I think it's quite cool to come back and hopefully maybe give people a different perspective.'

Star of the show Suranne welcomed her first child with husband Laurence Akers in March of this year, contributing to the delay in filming the next run of episodes.

She also admitted that she wouldn't take on the role unless she was convinced that the next season was worth continuing the story - rather than simply being an attempt to elongate the success of the first.

Sherlock director Jeremy Lovering will be in charge and Sara Stewart is thought to be returning as Susie - Kate's mother - along with Neil Stuke as Chris - Kate's father - with whom Gemma had a one night stand with out of revenge.
