Royal Ascot Day Five Tips: Brazen Beau worth a peep to fly Aussie flag in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes

  • Three-year-old Brazen Beau boasts the hallmarks of a superstar
  • Aussie compatriot Wandjina can vercome modest track position
  • Mustajeeb and last year’s runner-up Due Diligence should go well

The Aussie cricketers have arrived on our shores to defend the Ashes and fellow antipodeans BRAZEN BEAU (Ascot, 4.20) and Wandjina will be bidding to knock their rivals for six in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Those from a land Down Under have a rich heritage in the Royal meeting’s most prestigious sprints and this duo look sure to provide a stiff test for their 13 rivals.

Of the two, Brazen Beau is the pick as he boasts the hallmarks of a superstar judged on his efforts in Group One events at Flemington, where he has cruised through his races before quickening in exhilarating fashion to settle matters.

Unfortunately, his draw in 15 means he is stuck on the wing and, on the evidence of previous days, a lower draw is preferable.

However, Brazen Beau’s compatriot Wandjina likes to get on with it and I’m hopeful the selection will get a good tow into the race and overcome what appears a modest track position.

It almost goes without saying that Mustajeeb and last year’s runner-up Due Diligence should go well, with the former as good as ever dropped to six furlongs at the Curragh.

He had the class to win last year’s Jersey Stakes with authority and should be on the scene along with Due Diligence, whose sire War Front boasts an incredible record at Ascot.

However, connections of Brazen Beau have been delighted with his preparation and have even sent him for uphill training so he is accustomed to the track.

The sprint handicappers take their turn in the Wokingham Stakes and INTRINSIC (Ascot, 5.00) catches the eye on his return to action for the talented Robert Cowell. The five-year-old, winner of the Stewards’ Cup last season, has missed the first half of the season but is now reported in rude health by his trainer.

Cowell would perhaps have preferred his charge to have had a run before such a competitive heat and there is a chance he may prove a gallop short, but he boasts a great record in the hands of Richard Hughes and has looked a Group horse on occasions in his short career. That also applies to mahsoob (Ascot, 3.05), who announced himself as a horse to follow with a sparkling display on the Knavesmire last time.

John Gosden’s charge had no right to win from his position that day, but exhibited a terrific change of gear to pick up his rivals inside the distance. If he is anywhere near the front a furlong out, today’s foes may struggle to repel the son of Dansili.

Telescope will be all the rage for the Hardwicke Stakes as he bids to win it for the second successive year, but there should be more to come from postponed (Ascot, 3.40) now that he returns to 12 furlongs.

Luca Cumani looks to have centred the gelding’s campaign on this race and his form from Ireland last time was enhanced when The Grey Gatsby went close earlier in the week.
