Casey Affleck was named Best Actor for his role as the reluctant guardian of a 16-year-old nephew in Manchester by the Sea.

This year's big winner was La La Land, setting the movie up for possible success in January at the Golden Globe Awards - with Damien Chazelle's project sweeping the board, and bagging the director a gong

On the road to success: The movie was a run-away success at the awards, though leads Emma and Ryan failed to win a gong in their respective categories

Viola Davis' reprisal of her Broadway role as a concerned mother and wife in the film adaptation of August Wilson's play Fences landed her the Best Supporting Actress award.

Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for his depiction of a crack dealer in the drama Moonlight.

Accolades were also given to the top television series and stars in several categories. The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story was recognised as the Best Movie Made For Television or Limited Series.

Evening chic: Constance Zimmer wore a dramatic look by designer John Paul Ataker while Kate Micucci went for a playful LBD and Michelle Monaghan opted for sexy lace blazer and sheer trousers

Lovely in lace: Michelle Williams (wearing Louis Vuitton) and Busy Philipps (Martha Medeiros dress) sported pretty gowns in contrasting hues

Firm friends: The actresses - who starred in Dawson's Creek together - had a giggle as they cosied up for pictures

The BFCA has approximately 250 members - comprised of critics working in television, radio and online media.

They have been conducting the Critics' Choice awards since 1995 and are considered to represent most fully - out of awards handed out by film critics - the general public's taste.

This is the 22nd year the ceremony has taken place and it is often seen as one of the best indicators for how films will fare in awards season.

Over the last 10 years, eight of the Best Picture winners have gone on to take the same accolade at the Academy Awards.

Hollywood heartthrobs: Norman Reedus, John Travolta and Ryan Gosling looked great all tux'd up

Nailed it: Rhea Seehorn and Sarah Paulson (wearing Vera Wang) were super chic in white pencil two-pieces

Getting it right: Lily Collins stunned in a delicate high-neck dress with gothic hair and makeup

Pretty in pastels: Tracee Ellis Ross opted for a colourful striped number and glittery heels while Linda Cardellini opted for a flirty mini dress

Got the memo: Gillian Jacobs (wearing Delpozo), Constance Wu and Julie Bowan were on the same page with their floral motif white dresses

Hollywood couples: Hugh Grant made an appearance with partner Anna Elisabet Eberstein as did Jeff Bridges and his wife Susan

White stuff: Amanda Peet and Patrick Simondac dazzled in bright white

From the years 2000 to 2013 the Critics' Choice Awards' pick for Best Picture also saw these films crowned at the Oscars: 12 Years a Slave (2013), Argo (2012), The Artist (2011), The Hurt Locker (2009), Slumdog Millionaire (2008), No Country for Old Men (2007), The Departed (2006), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), Chicago (2002), A Beautiful Mind (2001), Gladiator (2000).

While for Best Actor the Critics' Choice named 12 out of the 13 Oscar winners during that same span of years.

The annual awards ceremony also predicted, by choosing its own winners, eight Best Actress winners at the Oscars in that 13 year stretch.

This year the show was hosted by comedic actor TJ Miller.

Barry Jenkins' coming-of-age drama Moonlight and Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi thriller Arrival followed with 10 nominations, though each picture failed to math La La Land's take-home with both only nabbing two wins a-piece.

While Ali bagged his Best Supporting Actor gang, the film also scored a win for Best Ensemble, while Arrival nabbed Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Horror/Sci-Fi.
