'What's wrong with beating on your drums in your birthday suit?' Matthew McConaughey waxes lyrical about THAT bongo arrest and his happy marriage to Camila Alves

It's been 17 years since Matthew McConaughey's naked bongo-playing arrest for marijuana possession and resisting transportation, but he remembers the incident like it was yesterday.

'What's wrong with beating on your drums in your birthday suit?' the 47-year-old Oscar winner asked in the January edition of Playboy.

'I have no regrets about the way I got there. But what’s the lesson? Shut the window that has the beautiful scent of jasmine blowing in because it's two in the morning and you might wake a neighbor.'

The Austin Police Department responded to a noise complaint at the Dazed & Confused alum's Meadowbrook Drive home and he spent nine hours in Travis County Jail before posting $1K bond.

'I saw the cop's eyes get big when he identified me, and it became, "Oh, look what we've got here,"' McConaughey recalled.

'My first call was to my mother [Kay]. I was feeling guilty because I was not raised to be in jail.'

The more serious charges were later dropped but the former Delta Tau Delta frat brother did have to pay a $50 fine for disturbing the peace.

The Kubo and the Two Strings actor also romantically recounted the moment he first met his wife of four years, Camila Alves, at Hollywood hotspot Hyde back in 2006.

'I was at a club making margaritas at my table with friends. When she walked in wearing this aqua dress, I went, "Whoa, what is that?" I didn't say, "Who is that?"' Matthew said of the former housekeeper, who learned English at 15.

'Grace, identity, constitution, beauty - where's that from? What is that? As soon as she caught my eye, a little voice goes in my head: "This is not the kind of woman you call across the room. Boy, get your a** out of that chair."

McConaughey continued: 'You can't dial up that kind of woman. I have been very faithful with my wife, very selfishly. I like being under her spell. I don't want to break that spell.'

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association opted not to nominate Matthew for a best actor Golden Globe for his role as Kenny Wells in Stephen Gaghan's crime adventure Gold.

The Lincoln brand ambassador wore false teeth, shaved his head, and gained 45lbs with copious amounts of 'beer and cheeseburgers' to better inhabit the hapless treasure hunter.

But the movie's theme song Gold - performed by punk legend Iggy Pop and Danger Mouse - managed to score a nod for best original song.
