'You’re so brave and strong': Lady Gaga puts differences aside to praise Madonna for speech where she railed against sexism and said she was raped
They have hardly been the best of friends over the years.
But Lady Gaga put her differences aside with Madonna to praise the singer on Monday for the 'brave' speech she gave when receiving the Woman Of The Year gong at the Billboard Music Awards.
As she accepted the prestigious paperweight at the event on Friday night the 58-year-old railed against sexism and claimed she had been raped on a rooftop in New York.
Girl power: Lady Gaga praised Madonna on Monday for the 'brave' speech she gave when receiving the Woman Of The Year gong at the Billboard Music Awards
Musing on the speech, the 30-year-old Poker Face star tweeted: '@Madonna your speech at the Billboard Music Awards was inspiring. You’re so brave & strong.
'Thanks for being that for us girls we need that.'
The dynamic duo have not been on the best of terms in the past, with Madge believing Gaga, real name Stefani Germanotta, borrows too much of her style for comfort.
But her young rival was clearly impressed by the Material Girl's speech after she received her award from Anderson Cooper.
Not having a pop: In contrast to this tweet the dynamic duo have often taken potshots at each other
Railing against the patriarchy: The megarich star blasted sexism and claimed she had been raped on a rooftop in New York
She said: 'Thank you for acknowledging my ability to continue my career for 34 years in the face of blatant misogyny, sexism, constant bullying and relentless abuse.
'When I first moved to New York, I was a teenager, it was 1979, and New York was a very scary place. In the first year, I was held up at gunpoint, raped on a rooftop with a knife digging into my throat, and I had my apartment broken into and robbed so many times I just stopped bolting the door.'
The Vogue singer, who is worth $800 million, also claimed that while it is fine to be 'cute and sexy,' being smart and having 'an opinion that is out of line with the status quo' is frowned upon due to the oppressive patriarchy.
Back in October Gaga launched into a diatribe about how different she is from Madonna after being compared to the star.
Friends in high places: Madonna was given her gong by macho newsman Anderson Cooper
She said: 'Madonna and I are very different. Just saying. We're very different. I wouldn't make that comparison at all and I don't mean to disrespect Madonna, she's a nice lady, and she's had a fantastic huge career, biggest pop star of all time.
'I play a lot of instruments. I write all my own music. I spend hours and hours a day in the studio. I'm a producer. I'm a writer. What I do is different.
'There is spontaneity to my work. I allow myself to fail. I allow myself to break. I'm not afraid of my flaws.'
Anyone who has witnessed Madonna, who started her career as a dancer, attempting to play guitar during her shows would be forced to concede the Artpop star has a point.
The lady doth protest too much, methinks: Her look in London last week certainly bears a resemblance to some of Madonna's old outfits
