Florida... capital of Disney? Yes and no. There is so much more to this state than Donald. As a welcome antidote all things frenetic we travelled south to Captiva Island.

It is not just a beach location, stunning though they all are. There are loads of activities for young and old. Our favourite? Crab Racing at Tween Waters Inn held on Mondays and a new experience, great fun and banter with mein host and a little flutter as well.

Stunning location right on the gulf, glass in hand at sunset, what better way to end a holiday evening?

Captiva is almost Caribbean in flavour, palm trees and white beaches abound. Restaurants aplenty and all within walking distance of the many private villas.

Surrounded by water, reached only by a stunning causeway, this is truly a place of relaxation and indulgence. The essence of a holiday destination!

And there is a British Pub, not of the ilk found in many hotspots but a civilised reminder of old England transplanted to a tropical isle. The difference being this particular 'olde world' inn fronts a stretch of beach so white the glare is blinding, and the sea aquamarine.

Rent a boat and visit the rustic island of Cabbage Key, follow the tourist trail to the Colonial inn and adorn it as they have done for generations with a dollar bill signed and dated.

Tradition has it you will return if you do this. Reader, we enjoyed this place, go and see it.
