From couch potato to spud stud: Food addict loses over 50 kilos in less than a year by eating nothing but POTATOES

  • Andrew Taylor has lived on a potato-only diet for almost a year
  • He eats nothing but boiled, mashed or baked potatoes for every meal
  • The diet had improved his cholesterol, blood pressure, weight and mental health
  • 'I've not had a single slip-up. It's been quite amazing to me as well,' he said

Andrew Taylor has lost more than 50 kilograms in less than a year by eating nothing but potatoes.

For every day since January 1 he has eaten only mashed potatoes, boiled potatoes and baked potatoes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

He said not only had the humble spud helped shrink his expanding waistline, it had also eased feelings of depression and anxiety.

Astonishing: Before he started the diet, Mr Taylor weighed 151 kilos (left). Now he weighs around 99 kilos (right)

Mr Taylor said he embarked on his astounding diet after realising he had a food addiction.

'If you're an addict you quit what you're addicted to,' he told Daily Mail Australia.

'Alcoholics quit alcohol, drug addicts quit drugs. But you can't quit food,' he said.

So, after extensive research, he settled for the next best thing and quit all types of food except for potato.

'Potatoes came up as being the best choice. They've got the most amounts of scientific evidence behind them.

'They’ve got all the carbs and proteins and fats and minerals and fibre and everything else.'

Amazing: Even Mr Taylor struggled to believe how strictly he had adhered to the diet

The diet had slowly improved his cholesterol levels, his blood pressure and had helped him go from 151 kilos to around 99 kilos.

It was a simple diet to stick to, he said, as all it involved was cooking massive batches of mashed, boiled or baked spuds and 'eating them until they're gone'.

He said he would go through between three and four kilograms of potatoes every day.

The secret to his diet was avoiding recipes with lots of oil, cream and cheese, and Mr Taylor said foods such as French fries were strictly off the menu.

He had started exercising one month into his diet, but said this had not played a major role in his weight loss.

Prepared: Getting his food ready was simple, Mr Taylor said. All it took was cooking a huge batch of potatoes (pictured) and eating them until they were gone

Mr Taylor had even managed to stick to the starchy diet while attending dinner parties and holidaying overseas.

'I've not had a single slip up.  It's been quite amazing to me as well. It’ll be a year on January 1.'

On January 1 Mr Taylor will host a celebratory breakfast where he will have his first taste of a non-potato dish.

He said he had no particular cravings for what he would eat at the breakfast and had asked the catering company to 'surprise him'.

'I’ll still eat a lot of potatoes once this diet is over,' he said.

'But I'll probably go on to include other things as well.'
