Trash talk: Julie Chen slams The View saying that rival show is 'withering away with a revolving door of hosts'

The Talk host Julie Chen had some very unkind words to say about The View while appearing on Watch What happens Live on Tuesday night.

Chen - whose husband Les Moonves was sitting in the front row for her interview - trashed the rival talk show after being asked to comment on a recent report that claimed Barbara Walters was 'furious' with state of the program she created almost 20 years ago.

'I believed every word I read in Page Six. And there were contradicting sides and I believed that all of it was true. There’s a little bit of truth to everything,' said Chen.

'Someone said, "Oh, she calls the control room and we take her notes seriously." I was like, "She calls the control room, I don't know if you take her notes that seriously. You probably make her feel like you're taking her notes seriously but she probably doesn't feel that way." 

'But I do think that Barbara Walters is probably like, "This amazing show I created is now just kind of withering away with a revolving door of hosts that people can’t keep straight.'" 

Chen then noted: 'I mean, I should know all the names of the hosts but I don't, cause it changes so often.'

An ABC spokesperson told DailyMail.com: 'The View is going strong and we are very proud to continue Barbara Walters' legacy that started almost 20 years ago.'

Chen previously trashed the show back in September of 2015 during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show.

When asked if she believed Walters should return to the show she launched, Chen said: 'That ship has sailed. No one can turn it around.'

Chen went on to say that she had been in a room of people when Walters asked what they thought about her going back to the daytime program.

'The whole room said, "Are you kidding me?"' Chen told Stern.

She then added: 'Out of common sense, she should stay away.' 

Chen and fellow Talk host also had less than kind things to say about The View during a 2013 appearance on the now-cancelled talk show Arsenio.

When asked about the differences between the two programs, a diplomatic Chen said: 'We do not discuss politics, we do not debate. I always say The View has changed over the years as the players have changed.' 

Osbourne then jumped in and said: 'Cut to the chase. Stop being polite. Cut to the f***ing chase.'

The rock wife then went on to say: 'This is the situation. Barbara, idolize her, divine, she is superhuman, I love. But the rest can go f*** themselves.'

Walters started The View in 1997, and only one host from that time remains on the show, Joy Behar.

Behar left the show after season 17, but returned for the start of season 19 in 2015, joining Whoopi Goldberg, Paula Farris, Candace Cameron-Bure, Michelle Collins and Raven-Symoné.

Of those women, only Behar and Goldberg remain full-time hosts on the new season of the show, though Faris does make appearances on the program. 

Cameron-Bure revealed she was leaving the show last week, saying her commitments to her acting career made it too hard to juggle her responsibilities on The View.

The Talk meanwhile was created by Sara Gilbert in 2010, and has been hosted by the Roseanne star, Chen, Osbourne, Aisha Tyler and Sheryl Underwood ever since its second season in 2011. 

The View is currently the only broadcast daytime show experiencing year to year improvement with both key women demos so far this season, and as of December 5 leads The Talk in total viewers (2.942 million vs. 2.761 million), Women 25-54 (545,000 vs. 493,000) and  Women 18 - 49 (414,000 vs. 346,000). 

A source told Page Six earlier this week that Walters was concerned that the show would be remembered for its 'petty backstage bickering' in years to come.

'She feels they’ve ruined the franchise that she and Bill Geddie built. Instead of focusing on smart, educated women with strong talent, they cast uninformed child actors on the show,' said the source.

'The legacy has been compromised because of poor casting and bad leadership under ABC News.'

It also claimed that Walters skipped a scheduled post-election appearance on the program.
