Jimmy Kimmel reveals he is getting just $15,000 to host the Oscars... because 'it's illegal to pay nothing'

Pocket money: Jimmy Kimmel has revealed he is getting paid just $15,000 to host the Oscars next year

He is said to earn a not inconsiderable $10 million per year.

So it is perhaps understandable Jimmy Kimmel was disappointed to discover he would only be paid a paltry $15,000 to host the Oscars next year.

However the late night star said there is a very special reason that he is getting such a meagre pay packet.

The 49-year-old told KROQ's The Kevin And Bean Show on Wednesday: 'You know why? I think it’s illegal to pay nothing.'

However he claims he is getting just as much as previous hosts such as Billy Crystal, Chris Rock and, in a small victory for equality, Ellen DeGeneres, as he said, 'that’s what they told me.”

And he was unapologetic about his choice to lay bare just what the hosts of the show get paid to entertain an audience of millions around the world.

Jimmy, who is worth an estimated $35M, said: 'I’m not sure I was supposed to reveal this, but nobody told me not to. I consider this their fault.'

Jimmy was finally named as the host of the Academy Awards after years of snubs last week, and he admitted he could not believe his time had come.

It comes on the back of his critically acclaimed performance at the 2016 Emmy Awards.

He said: 'They asked like 14 people and they all said no and then there I was.'

Rock bottom prices: He said previous hosts Chris and Billy Crystal got the same paltry sum

A victory for feminism: Ellen DeGeneres seems to have been paid just as little as male hosts

It is thought ABC, which is owned by media giant Disney, applied pressure to have their choice of host in the midst of plummeting ratings for the show.

Chris Rock's return as host coincided with an eight-year low in viewing figures, with just 34 million tuning in to watch the A-lister back-slapping fest.

And the chance to promote the host in front of such a large audience could be a boon for the channel and his programme Live With Jimmy Kimmel, which is being trounced in the ratings by The Tonight Show.

Indeed at times it gets even less viewers than the woeful Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
