Back with a bang: The beloved Despicable Me franchise teased at its return on Wednesday as it released the trailer for its hilarious third installment - starring new villain Balthazar Bratt

Man on a mission: The new villain takes shape as a fallen 1980s star complete with shoulder pads and a huge quiff

The new flick is set to follow favourites Gru, Lucy and their cheeky Minions in their battle against the former 80s child star.

At first invoking terror by attempting to siege the ship, the anti-hero reveals himself to be not quite as threatening as he wishes, as he proceeds to moonwalk across the ocean to the sounds of Michael Jackson.

Clearly stuck in his famous past, the villain proceeds to use iconic items from the era as his weapons as he attempts world domination - including an exploding Rubik's Cube and destructive bubblegum.

'Is that a man in shoulder pads?': At first invoking terror by attempting to siege the ship, the anti-hero reveals himself to be not quite as threatening as he wishes

Balthazar, clad in a purple jumpsuit complete with bulging shoulder pads and rocking a full on quiff, later shakes up the villainous image further by challenging Gru to a dance-off in attempt to settle their battle.

Kicking and flailing pathetically in his routine, Gru is then seen knocking the wannabe popstar out with one blow - adding to the trailer's entertainment and proving that good always succeeds over evil.

Other hilarious features in the trailer include Gru and Lucy aptly nicknaming themselves 'Grucy' for their mission, and Gru succombing to the devastating pink gum, which strips him naked in front of his friends.

Trey Parker, who co-wrote and directed hit musical The Book of Mormon, provides the voice of the new colourful villain, while Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig reprise their roles as Gru and Lucy.

The film's plot follows Balthazar in his quest for a giant pink jewel and revenge on the world - after the TV show that catapulted him to fame was cancelled years ago due to puberty.

In addition, much-loved hero Gru becomes embroiled in sibling rivalry when he meets his long lost twin brother, Dru.

The family flick is set to be a success when it hits cinemas next summer - with its predecessor Despicable Me 2 grossing more then $970 million worldwide.

During promotion for the second film back in 2013, Carrell credited the success of the series' to its sense of realism - which no doubt will extend into its third project.

Talking in an interview with I Am Rogue, the actor said: 'It's like you're watching real, living, breathing people. Even though they're from a parallel universe, they might not look exactly like human beings, you really get the sense that they're alive. And it's kind of remarkable.'

The film is scheduled to be released on June 30, 2017.
