Summer is a time we all let our hair down and enjoy a well-deserved break abroad, and the stars are no different. 

But where do the rich and famous while away their summer days, and where is the best place to spot them?

The French Riviera will soon attract some of the biggest names in Hollywood, while Dubai has become a playground for celebrities who are looking for luxurious getaways. MailOnline Travel has compiled a list of the best places to spot the stars this summer.

This buzzing Italian restaurant combines superb cuisine with an electric lounge scene. Leonardo DiCaprio, Sofia Vergara and Barbara Walters have dined here.

For the best charity galas - Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club

From charity bashes to lavish celebrity parties, the stars will often end up at this venue, including Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick.

For live music - Montauk Beach House

Enjoy music from the two pools at this prime celebrity spotting location. Performers include Mark Ronson and Young Empires, with Rose Byrne, Cynthia Rowley and Chloe Sevigny being in the audience.

The Hamptons

The Long Island retreat outside of New York City has long been a summer pilgrimage for the wealthy. 

It features some of the most expensive houses in the United States, and is the playground of the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow and P. Diddy, who all own property there. 

Always aiming to be on trend, members of the Kardashian clan filmed a reality series in the Hamptons.

Kourtney & Khloé Take the Hamptons saw the two famous sisters opening a new Dash shop on 35 Main Street. 

Not long open in East Hampton is Salon Bar, which boasts luxury pampering treatments for the rich and famous and is sure to draw in some wealthy names this summer. 

The signature beauty treatments include a 24-karat gold collagen mask and an anti-aging caviar DNA serum treatment.

Salon Bar also offer indulgent options such as wine and chocolate body wraps.

Head to Southampton and East Hampton for the best opportunity to see some big names and to eat at the best restaurants. 

But you'll need deep pockets, the area has long been a favourite with the rich and powerful, from presidents to company CEOs, so prices are steep.

This was once an official Cannes partner, and the Chopard Lounge which welcomes clients and celebrities to try on pearl necklaces and view precious gems while relaxing in the ambient setting.

Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes International Film Festival is held every year on France's glamorous Cote D'Azur and debuts new films of all genres. 

It is one of the most prestigious film festivals attracting hoards of A-list celebrities to the region.

Everyone from models Cara Delevingne and Suki Waterhouse, to Lana Del Rey and Justin Bieber descends on the French Riviera playground.

Cara and Suki partied the night away at the VIP Room last year, with stars Eva Longoria and Robert Pattinson checking into the luxurious The Martinez.

Other popular places to stay include the InterContinental Carlton Cannes, Majestic Barrière Cannes, and the JW Marriott Cannes. 

This year the festival is being held 13-24 May and will be sure to be a celebrity hot spot.

But if you can't afford to splash out on a stay during the glamorous town's most important week, you'll still see your fair share of celebrities at other times. Stars including Hayden Panattiere and Bieber love nothing more than lounging on yachts on the French Riviera.

If Cannes is just not your scene, why not head further down the coast to pretty little Saint-Tropez?

Another one of France's glitziest resorts, it is yet another hang out for scores of celebrities, who prefer to enjoy the area from the comfort of their yachts. 

Last year supermodel Gigi Hadid, and her family were seen taking a well-deserved break on their luxurious boat, and Sir Elton John is a known lover of the French Riviera location. 

When the stars do depart from their boats, they can been seen at day beach club Nikki Beach, which is located away from the main harbour, or enjoying a lunch time meal at the iconic beach bar Club 55.

Coachella

It is hard to avoid the celebrity pictures from California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, and it appears to be the main summer event for anyone who is anyone.

For two weekends a year, the stars radiate bohemian style whilst enjoying the music in the Colorado Desert.

Last year Alessandra Ambrosio was among those seen pushing the boundaries of care-free fashion, before heading to the many brand after-parties.

The list of stars set to attend the event this month will be numerous, but if last year is anything to go by, we will be sure to see Vanessa Hudgens, Lindsay Lohan and many of the Victoria Secret models.

Dubai, the desert playground for adults, attracts many stars flocking for sun and luxury hotel experiences. 

Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Roger Federer, and Selena Gomez have all enjoyed stays at the world's only seven-star hotel, the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, with Rory McIlroy even playing golf off the helipad. 

For the super rich, you can enjoy your own private beach, and swimming pools, and spa for the small sum of £5,370 ($8,253) a night. 

Or try the $4billion (£2.6billion) Emirates Palace hotel which has seen the likes of Paris Hilton stay in its luxury rooms.

For partying... Fontainebleau

Anyone who is anyone has celebrated at this oceanfront resort, including President Barack Obama. Christina Aguilera and Kim Kardashian were also spotted celebrating Simone Harouches' bachelorette party. 

Miami 

South Florida's sunny and vibrant city always attracts the wealthy seeking rays and music in the summer. 

With its unrivalled night life and long stretches of sandy beaches, it is a firm favourite with the likes of Cameron Diaz, Christina Aguilera and even US President Barack Obama.  

If you are looking to shop, places like The Webster have seen many high profile names through its doors, such as Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Amber Heard, where she was caught browsing in a string bikini. 

In Ian Fleming's Goldfinger, James Bond has Champagne and crab legs at Joe's Stone Crab, which was a favourite for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Al Capone, and Muhammad Ali.

The famous stone crabs are even flown out for celebrities unwilling to make the trip. 

If you are looking for drinks rapper Drake and rocker Lenny Kravitz have been seen at the American Airlines Arena in the Hyde Lounge, which has many bars and a high-end culinary programme. 

And if you want a taste of excess, Gianni Versace's famous South Beach mansion has been turned into the ultimate 10-suite boutique hotel, complete with 54-ft 'thousand mosaic' swimming pool lined in 24-karat gold.

But be warned, prices for one night in a villa suite start at £1,315.

Located on the romantic island of Torcello, this stunning restaurant is surrounded by free roaming sheep and has been used for many proposals. 

Lake Como and Venice

It has long been one of the most iconic lakeside escapes in Europe, but when George Clooney snapped up property, Lake Como saw a surge in interest from holidaymakers.

The actor and his new wife Amal still own a villa overlooking the third largest lake in Italy, and they aren't the only stars in town. Madonna and Sir Richard Branson also own property in the area famed for its unspoilt villages that dot the shoreline. 

The iconic Villa d'Este is the favourite hotel for the stars, with sumptuous furnishings, chandeliers throughout and expansive manicured gardens. Film director Alfred Hitchcock loved the hotel and Mick Jagger, Kylie Minogue and Robert De Niro have all visited.

Time your trip to Italy perfectly by coinciding with the Venice Film Festival, which is happening on September 2-12, about three hours away from Lake Como.

Created in 1942, the film festival is not only the oldest international film festival, but also one of the most prestigious in the world, and draws a strong celebrity crowd.

Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock and Jack Nicholson have all attended in previous years and the popular places to stay include the iconic Cipriani Hotel, the historic Danieli and the more modern, luxurious Bulgari.

Wimbledon 

During late June and early July, if you are lucky enough to get tickets for the Wimbledon Championships, you will find your fair share of celebrities and royalty indulging in strawberries and cream and Pimm's, whilst enjoying the best tennis in the world.

Obviously the stars love nothing more than catching the action on Centre Court, with the Beckhams, Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman and Pippa Middleton particular fans of the iconic tennis competition.

But you don't just have to splash out on the best tickets. Many fans queue up on the day for ground entry tickets and can take in several different matches as well as enjoy the chance spy someone famous around the south London venue. 

The tournament is running from June 29 to July 12 this year.
