'Not a good idea to paintball with alcohol': Michael Fassbender recalls the time he got into a booze-fuelled paintball 'shootout'

The Spanish town of Almeria provided the backdrop for one of film's best-loved westerns: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

And the Andalusian town played host to an altogether different 'shootout' when actor Michael Fassbender organised a paintball match.

The 39-year-old rented a section of the town as a treat for cast and crew of Assassin's Creed, and he told TheFIX on Wednesday that this particular gunfight had alcohol involved.

He said: 'We got to do it in one of the towns from the spaghetti westerns [Almeria, Spain], so we got to take over the town and have this shootout.

'The Saloon was the HQ, which got sort of dangerous because there was alcohol involved - not a good idea to paintball with alcohol, of course - but it happened.'

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the experience ended up a painful one for the 12 Years A Slave star - despite director Justin Kurzel saying he was 'extraordinary' at paintball.

A malfunction with his rented paintball gun contributed to Michael's downfall, while he was also left to bemoan an enemy fighter who shot him at close range with a professional paintball gun.
