'I didn't want to play a crack addict': Naomie Harris reveals she almost turned down gritty Moonlight role... which has now earned her countless Best Supporting Actress nods 

Her brilliant performance in Moonlight has earned her nods in the Best Supporting Actress category ahead of all the main awards, including the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globe Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

But Naomie Harris has revealed she almost turned down the role that could set her up for major critical success next year - all because she 'didn't want to play a crack addict'.

The 40-year-old actress chatted about her gritty new film during an appearance on The Graham Norton show.

The British beauty said: 'I feel like an idiot now but I nearly didn't do it.

'I didn't want to play a crack addict, I wanted to portray positive images of women in general, and black women in particular and I thought a crack addict wasn't part of that.

'I was stupidly about to say no when the director said he was basically asking me to play his mother and I've never had anyone ask me to play their mum before.

Upcoming drama Moonlight, directed by Barry Jenkins, chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.

It has already been making major waves and is expected to be one of the big winners at 2017 awards season.

On a special festive show, set to air on Friday 23 December, Graham welcomes Naomi and her Collateral Beauty co-stars Will Smith and Dame Helen Mirren, as well as Sherlock star Martin Freeman and singer/songwriter Katie Melua.

Naomie shared a host of stories from set, including Hollywood hunk Will's funny side.

She laughed: 'He can also very annoying like an older brother. Never show weakness to Will.

'I made the mistake of telling him that I turned up with my whole family to the premiere of my first ever movie – I was all dressed up and did the red carpet and everything – only to find out that it wasn't me on screen. I had been replaced by another actress!'

A chuckling Will enthused: 'It was the funniest thing I had ever heard.'

Revealing Will dined with her parents recently, Naomie joked that things didn't go quite to plan.

'They were really casual and acted like a movie star comes over every day', she said.

'They were cool but I did have to tell my little brother off for taking pictures of Will across the table.

'I said it was really rude to take pictures of people when they don't know you're doing it and he said, 'It's okay, mum's already posted it on Facebook!''
