Tara Reid has paid an emotional tribute to her father Thomas after revealing he passed away.

In a poignant Instagram post on Friday morning, the American Pie star shared a picture of herself and her dad, who is thought to have been around aged 75 when he died.

'Today, I've received terrible news that my father, Thomas Reid, has passed away,' she wrote. 'He was a man full of life, love, wisdom, and strength.

'He was not only fun and in good spirits, but he was also one of the best story tellers I've ever heard.

She added: 'My dad was so supportive, kind, strong, and my hero. He was my heart, my soul, and my entire world. I love you and will miss you so much daddy! #RIPDaddyReid.'

Thomas had six children: Tom, Kath, Tara, James and twins Colleen and Patrick.

He and his wife Donna brought up their family in New Jersey where Tara was talent-spotted at an early age.

Happy to be home! The news comes after Tara posted several Instagrams from her family home over Christmas

The 41-year-old actress had spent Christmas with Thomas and Donna who worked as teachers and day car centre owners.

She had posted several shots of herself on Instagram sporting festive attire and posing with her dog.

'At home at my parents for Christmas and I just saw my doggie again. I love my dog!' she wrote on Christmas Eve, adding on Twitter: 'Just got to my parents house for Christmas! Just reunited with the love of my life! My dog Pasha!'

And in a sweet Christmas Day post where she posed in front of the family Christmas tree, she wrote: 'Merry Christmas I love you all! Feels so good be around my family.'

However, the star jetted to Hong Kong on December 29 to make a personal New Year's Eve appearance at LKF restaurant and bar Ciao Chow.

'So excited!' she tweeted before flying out. 'Leaving for Hong Kong in the morning! To see some friends and celebrate the New Years there!'
