The FTSE 100 smashed its mid-session record and set a new all-time closing high by rising 22.57 points to 7,142.83. The late surge saw the UK's premier index break above the mid-session record of 7129.83 recorded on October 11 and record a fresh closing high for the third day running. It came as London emerged as the best performer out of the major European stock markets this year, finishing 2016 more than 14 per cent higher despite Britain's voted to leave the European Union on June 23.

Meanwhile, families' spending power is continuing to slow after inflation hit a two-year high of 1.2 per cent last month, another study suggests.
House prices could rise just 1% next year as economic uncertainty keeps buyers on the sidelines - Halifax
Britain's biggest mortgage lender said annual house price growth will be between one and four per cent by the end of next year, compared to a peak of 10 per cent recorded in March this year. It says the relatively wide range for its estimation 'reflects the higher than normal degree of uncertainty regarding the prospects for the UK economy next year'.
