But the bride-to-be did not comment on her forthcoming nuptials to the press.

According to stuff.co.nz, she answered only a few questions, very briefly saying that it was her sister Venus who encouraged her to come to New Zealand.

'It was all Venus, so we should just thank Venus when she arrives,' Serena said.

She added: 'She told me it was great and that I should come and I always listen to my big sister.

'It's always fun to go places you've never been and I'm excited to be here.'

Ahead of her arrival in New Zealand she posted a video to Facebook telling her fans there that she was excited to touchdown in the country.

Williams revealed in her poem that she came home to find her bags packed and ready to go for the surprise trip that Ohanian had planned for them.

'Someone had a bag packed for me / And a carriage awaited / Destination: Rome / To escort me to my very own 'charming' / Back to where our stars first collided,' wrote Williams.

She also included a graphic that showed her dressed in her tennis gear and floating on air as Ohanian presented her with a large diamond.

Williams, who is notoriously private about her personal life, has never spoken about her relationship with Ohanian in the press.

The news that the pair met in Rome suggests however that they first met in May of 2015, as Williams plays the clay court tournament in the Italian city every year ahead of the French Open.

Williams and Ohanian were first spotted together at dinner in San Francisco back in November of 2015 thanks to surveillance video that was later released by the restaurant.

During that date, a man stole Williams phone off the table and then rushed out of the restaurant.

Once Williams noticed what had happened she quickly got up, made her way through the crowd, and caught up with the man outside.

In the end, the man sheepishly returned the device and Williams returned to her meal.

Memories: Ohanian marked his one-year anniversary with Williams earlier this year by saying he had fallen in love with tennis while in Rome a year prior (above)

Greatest: In addition to wedding planning, Williams will also be chasing history this year as she hopes to become the first player in the Open Era to win 23 Grand Slams (left at the 2015 vanity Fair Oscar party, right in September at the US Open)

Over the past year, Ohanian has become Williams' biggest cheerleader on social media, documenting her accomplishments both on and off the court.

This past May he posted a photo of Williams playing in Rome, a tournament she would go on to win, writing: 'A year ago today, I became a tennis fan. One of the best decisions I ever made.'

Two months later, he documented Williams historic win at the All England Club, writing: 'Our queen stopped by center court today. So proud of you, @serenawilliams. 22 looks good on you. #Wimbledon.'

He then posted again later that same day when Williams and her sister Venus captured their sixth Wimbledon title in Ladies Doubles, writing:  'It was a good day. These two are ready for Rio. #wimbledon.'

Ohanian also took his mother to sit in Williams' box during the tournament.

In September, when Williams broke yet another record at the US Open, Ohanian posted a photo and wrote: '308th career Grand Slam match win for the greatest, @serenawilliams - taking time out for her fans on her way to 309 and many more.'

And a few days after her devastating loss in that tournament he sat front row at her fashion show, snapping a pic as she took her final bow after the collection.

'Congrats on a great show @serenawilliams - so proud of you. Well on your way to dominating another industry. #NYFW #blurry,' wrote Ohanian.

Love life: Williams two longest relationships prior to Ohanian were with Brett Ratner (left in 2005) and Common (right in 2010)

Heartbreak: Williams was reportedly devastated when she was dumped by actor Jackie Long (above in 2007) after a few months of dating

Tennis mates: Williams was linked to Grigor Dimitrov, who rebounded from their split with Maria Sharapova (left in 2015) and her tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou (right in June)

Prior to Ohanian, Williams was linked to a number of A-list stars from the worlds of film, music and sports.

Her first high-profile relationship came in 2002 with reports that she was dating football star Keyshawn Johnson, who was a decade her senior.

Johnson, who was the first pick in the 1996 draft, was playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the time and had just split with his first wife.

The relationship was never confirmed, but if true the two certainly had a positive impact on one another, with Serena winning four straight Grand Slams for the first time in her career between 2002 and 2003 and Johnson leading the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory.

In 2004, Williams began dating director Brett Ratner, a relationship that would last for two years.

Ratner, who was 12 years older than Williams at the time, was at the peak of his career at the time thanks to the success of the first two Rush Hour films.

He directed the biggest film of his career during that time, X-Men: The Last Stand, which grossed close to $500million worldwide.

Williams meanwhile won just one Grand Slam during those two years.

After that relationship ended she dated actor Jackie Long in 2007, who reportedly dumped the tennis star.

Williams later wrote a blog detailing how a man believed to be Long 'disappeared for a week' before calling to break up with her at the same time she was falling in love with him.

Having some fun: There were rumors in 2010 that Williams was seeing New York Knicks star  Amar'e Stoudemire

Hotline bling: Williams was rumored to be with Drake throughout 2015, and he was courtside cheering her on at the US Open (above at her fashion show in September 2015)

The following year Williams began dating rapper Common, who she spent two years with.

The couple were frequently spotted out together at events, and even in the years after their split there were rumors that they had reunited.

Williams was briefly linked to another A-list name after her split from Common, Amar'e Stoudemire.

Ohanian with his ex Sabriya Stukes in 2014

She and the Stoudemire were rumored to be an item after she and the New York Knicks power forward were spotted attending events together in the city.

For her next relationship, Williams chose a tennis player, dating Bulgarian heartthrob Grigor Dimitrov.

The affair was brief, and after the split Dimitrov began dating Maria Sharapova, whom Williams has defeated in their last 18 straight matches.

Next up was her tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou, whom Williams was rumored to be with in 2012 after her split from Dimitrov.

That relationship fizzled out, but Mouratoglou has continued to be Williams coach and is credited with her incredible success over the past five years.

And last, but not least, were the rumors that Williams was dating Drake in 2015.

Those rumors now seem to have been false as she would have been with Ohanian at the time, unless the two were not yet serious or on a break.

By her side: After Williams was defeated at the US Open, Ohanian was front row at her fashion show to support her

Ohanian has also spoken little about his relationship with Williams, with the exception of his social media posts and announcing their engagement.

There will be little time for celebration however as Williams is due back on the court next week, as she is set to play in the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand.

It will be her first tournament since the US Open this past September, with Williams opting to cut her season short following her defeat in the semifinals.

The ASB Classic will also be the a chance for Williams to prepare for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam event of the tennis season.

Should Williams win in Australia, something she has done six times in the past, she would hold the record for most Grand Slam singles wins by any player in the open era with 23. She is currently tied for the record at 22 wins with Steffi Graff.

From there she will be aiming to break the all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles wins set by Margaret Court.

The WTA Tour offered their congratulations to Williams on Thursday by posting a photo of her and Ohanian on their Twitter account.
