Savoy Motel (Whats Your Rupture)
This Nashville quartet aspires to play southern rock in a modern tradition, but their debut also owes something to Seventies glam a recurring theme these days on the indie underground, typified by fellow Americans the Lemon Twigs. There are shades of Roxy Music on Western Version Boogie and nods to the staccato style of the Strokes. The bands three singers, one male and two female, lend a distinctive edge.

Dictionary Of Soul (Rhino)
Now expanded, Reddings fifth LP is one of the defining moments of soul music. Powered by a band that included Booker T & The MGs, plus pianist Isaac Hayes, it was the last solo release before his death in 1967 and features the classics Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song) and Try A Little Tenderness. Otis even turned The Beatles Day Tripper into a Southern soul stomper.

Ring Spiel Tour 95 (Columbia)
Watt is an unsung stalwart of U.S. grunge rock, and his 1995 touring band were dubbed the Mount Rushmore of American indie for good reason: Pearl Jams Eddie Vedder was prominent as was Foo Fighter Dave Grohl. This live album veers between country and rock, with Watts originals spiced up with Madonna and Blue Oyster Cult covers.

True Stories (FOD)
Watson displays admirable adaptability on an album made on old-school tape with film composer Ennio Morricones 75-piece orchestra in Rome. The versatile tenor brings passion to his show tunes, tackles an operatic piece by Bizet with gusto and channels Sinatra on Wee Small Hours and Tony Bennett on Who Can I Turn To. There is room, too, for a brace of self-penned songs, with When It Shines an ELO-like string piece. He tours next year.

Homages (Decca 483 0255)
This young British pianist confirms his place at the top table with an outstanding recital. He tackles six challenging pieces: Busonis transcription of Bachs Chaconne is beautifully shaped; Chopins Barcarolle gets a superb reading; while two Mendelssohn Preludes and Fugues unusual choices are justified by lovely playing.

The Killers have made a charity single every Christmas since 2006, and Dont Waste Your Wishes gathers all 11 together. With Elton John and Neil Tennant contributing, and singer Brandon Flowerss mischievous sense of humour to the fore, the outcome is impressive. Feel It In My Bones forms the centrepiece of a song trilogy that cast the bands road manager as a murderous Santa with sinister plans for those on his naughty list. The sole cover is a real tear-jerker, as Flowers hooks up with his former Las Vegas school teacher Mr Hansen, now 86, on Ill Be Home For Christmas.
