Boasting white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and woodland trails, few would need persuading to holiday in the US Virgin Islands - but there now is an added incentive if you take a trip in 2017.

To celebrate the centenary of the islands coming under US control, the government is giving holidaymakers $300 (£243) to spend on the island next year.

But tourists handed the credits, which can be used like currency, can only use them on adventurous and tourist activities on the paradise islands.

The destination’s department of tourism has teamed up with USVI.com to mark the island’s historic transfer from a Danish Caribbean territory to become part of the United States on the March 31, 1917.

Visitors to the island can redeem currency credits worth $300 to splash out on top historical and cultural attractions and activities including eco and food tours, museums and galleries and water sports adventures.

The credits do not, however, cover alcohol, according to Thrillist.

Holidaymakers can receive these credits at their hotel and are only entitled to them if they spend three-nights in the destination during 2017.

Tourists must also book their trip to the Virgin Islands by 1 October 2017 to take advantage of the offer.

The US Virgin Islands comprise four diverse islands - St Croix, St Thomas, St John and Water Island.

Visitors can discover a historic hub with Danish architecture at St Croix or go shopping in the the cruise port of St Thomas.

Hikers and snorkellers are catered for in the rugged national park of St John, which is home to lush forests and coral reefs.

And water sports fans can take a boat trip to explore the natural delights of tiny Water Island.
