Millions of party-goers packed out pubs and clubs, with some braving freezing temperatures in skimpy outfits (right). However, as Britons waved goodbye to 2016, there were some unsavoury scenes, with one shirtless man seen kicking another man lying in a gutter in Manchester (main picture). For many, the name of the game was to drink to the point of oblivion, with dozens of party-goers unable to stand (left and inset) or speak, and having to be helped home by their friends, while others slept on bins (top left).

George Michael was found dead on Christmas Day at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. The Careless Whisper singer was found in his bed by Fawaz (pictured with singer), who had gone to wake him up ahead of a planned Christmas Day lunch. In a series of tweets this morning, Fawaz wrote: 'I was in relationship (sic) with george micheal till i found him dead in bed. 'The only thing George wanted is to DIE. He tried numbers of time to kill himself many times...And finally he managed...We loved each other very much and we were together almost 24 hours a day...' His account appears to have been deleted since. The tweets come after reports emerged that police will be speaking to him as part of their investigation into the singer's death.

Buckingham Palace announced the decision this morning after it was revealed yesterday that the 90-year-old monarch was still recovering from the illness.

Facebook announced on 19 February that it acquired the globally popular messaging system WhatsApp for 19 billion US dollar. Facebook paid 12 billion US dollar in shares and four billion US dollar in cash. The deal includes an additional three billion US dollar in Facebook stock for WhatsApp founders and employees. The deal should close later in 2014 and is still subject to regulatory approval, according to Facebook founder and Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, who said in the conference call that he did not expect any issues. Additionally, WhatsApp co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Jan Koum will join the Facebook Board of Directors.

But authorities now believe that 29-year-old Moreira killed Amiridis in a 'crime of passion' at Oliveira's direction. They said the ambassador was likely stabbed in the Rio De Janeiro home he owned with his wife, and that his body was burnt afterwards. Oliveira and Moreira were both taken into custody on Friday.

Two puppies who grew up together on a dog meat farm have been reunited after being rescued and adopted by different families in the USA. Kenji and Sophia, both white Samoyeds, were used at the farm to breed puppies that would be killed for food. They were rescued last year, and after months apart saw each other for the first time recently.

Beloved pair of bald eagles welcome their first eaglet after the world watched with bated breath for days

An incredibly adorable bald eaglet has finally broken out of its shell in its Florida nest. Eagle parents, Harriet and M15, are Fort Myers' most beloved bald eagles and onlookers from across the globe watched eagerly as the pair welcomed their first hatchling Saturday morning. After it was born, the baby bird was heard singing as Harriet and M15 continued their wait for their second egg to hatch. Both eggs were expected to hatch between Christmas and News Year's Day. And since the second egg has yet to hatch, some are speculating that the sibling eaglets may be born in 2016 and 2017. At one point the mama bird left her nest, allowing viewers to get a good look at the newest addition to the bald eagle family. The little ball of fluff waited patiently for its mother to return and even chirped a little. Once Harriet came back to the nest, she carefully maneuvered her body so that the egg and her hatchling would fit comfortably under her belly.
