ARSENAL 2-0 CRYSTAL PALACE - MATT BARLOW AT THE EMIRATES STADIUM:Think of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 'scorpion' style goal against Sunderland. Think of Jack Wilshere’s goal against Norwich, three years ago, a slick and intricate Arsenal sweep of the pitch with a sting in the tail. Put them together and you get Olivier Giroud’s goal against Crystal Palace. An exquisite moment of such delight that will probably survive the next 364 days and still be the Premier League’s best goal of 2017. It is certainly the most outrageous of this season. And it was, as Arsenal supporters were quick to gloat, falling over each other in a race to tap the keys of social media, better than Mkhitaryan’s by virtue of the build-up, the great distance from goal – and the fact it was onside.
The Harry and Dele show: Kane and Alli both strike twice as Tottenham run riot in four-goal Watford win to push Man City out of the top four
WATFORD 1-4 TOTTENHAM - SAM MOKBEL AT VICARAGE ROAD: New year, same old Harry Kane. Two goals and a brace of assists for the Tottenham striker on his first outing of the year. Some things never change. Tottenham, in short, embarrassed Watford here at Vicarage Road. Or perhaps more accurately, Watford - particularly their defenders - embarrassed themselves.
Giroud and Mkhitaryan both scored with scorpion kicks... but which one was better?
It was a case of anything you can do I can do better for Olivier Giroud and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, after the Arsenal striker scored a 'scorpion' flick wonder goal to rival that of the Manchester United play-maker. Mkhitaryan wrote the headlines on Boxing day with his sublime heel-flicked finish against Sunderland at Old Trafford, but just six days later Arsenal man Giroud went and perfectly copied his heroics during the Gunners' clash with Crystal Palace. As Giroud's effort crashed in off the underside of the crossbar former pro Gary Neville hailed it as 'one of the best goals i've ever seen.'
Pogba and Ibrahimovic start 2017 cold as Man United pair wish fans a Happy New Year... from an ice bath
Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have started 2017 'cold' despite playing key parts in Manchester United's win over Middlesbrough on New Year's Eve. Pogba uploaded a video to Instagram of him and Ibrahimovic taking an ice bath to recover from the 2-1 victory. He also added the caption: 'This guys will kill me on day.' The France international, who scored the winning goal at Old Trafford, starts the footage by asking the striker: 'Zlatan, what are you saying today?'
Messi's family swim, Bale suited and booted and Mayweather dressed like Michael Jackson... how stars rang in the New Year
Sports stars around the world rang in the New Year in style - with sharp suits, glamorous dresses, fireworks and raucous parties seemingly the order of the day. Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed a superb 2016 - winning the European Championship, Champions League and the Ballon d'Or - but his New Year's Eve was spent with family as his mum celebrated her birthday. Barcelona's Lionel Messi, meanwhile, saw in 2017 in a swimming pool with his family.
Kroos causes a stir after German's cryptic happy New Year message pokes fun at 7-1 thrashing of Brazil at 2014 World Cup
Despite Germany's 7-1 demolition of Brazil now nearly three years ago, that hasn't stopped Toni Kroos from using the New Year as a way of poking fun. Kroos used Twitter to wish his 4.36million followers a 'Happy 2017' but a closer look revealed the real intention of his message. Cunningly he replaced '1' and '7' with the flags of Brazil and Germany to bring back memories of the World Cup semi-final in Belo Horizonte.
Sturridge, Van Dijk, Schneiderlin... and more! The 10 big deals that could make a difference in the January transfer window
The January transfer window is a time for teams to evaluate their current crop and add to them if at all necessary. For some squads major surgery is required and for others just a couple of additions will be enough. And as the window opens again, Sportsmail's Simon Jones looks at some of the business that could be about to take place as teams and players try to hit the new year running.
Martial celebrates start of 2017 with his girlfriend after starring against Boro... but Mourinho urges youngster to listen to his advice to end mercurial form
CHRIS WHEELER AT OLD TRAFFORD: Jose Mourinho saw Anthony Martial give Manchester United fans a reminder of his mercurial talent and then told the young Frenchman: ‘Listen to me, not your agent.’ Martial, pictured with girlfriend Melanie Da Cruz, crowned an excellent performance with United’s equaliser as they came from behind to beat Middlesbrough with two late goals at Old Trafford.

However, the Watford mascot won't have enjoyed his afternoon in the rain after seeing his side fall to a 4-1 defeat by Tottenham.

The rise and staggering fall of Leeds: Top of the Premier League on New Year's Day in 2002, here's how a team imploded amid rows, a court case and financial woe
A decade and a half ago, an unfamiliar name ended New Year’s Day top of the Premier League. It was not Manchester United, not Chelsea, not Arsenal or Liverpool. After a brilliant 3-0 win against West Ham, Leeds United sat atop the pile. The English game’s greatest sleeping giants hurtled downwards within three years. Life at Elland Road, until recently, has not been great. Just 15 years ago, though, David O’Leary was in charge of an exciting young side that looked like they could be the team of the new millennium. They were one of the last great homegrown sides of English football. Just look at the list of players who lined up against West Ham - of those Jonathan Woodgate, Ian Harte, Alan Smith, Gary Kelly and David Batty all came through the club’s Thorp Arch academy. On the bench were three more academy produced players, Paul Robinson, Stephen McPhail and Harpal Singh, while only fitness woes kept out Harry Kewell.
'It's not Usain Bolt is it?': The moment stunned MUTV presenter realised Olympic sprint king HAD called in to show to discuss Manchester United's win over Boro
Manchester United's in-house television channel got a shock when Usain Bolt called up to discuss the 2-1 win over Middlesbrough. In the traditional post-match phone-in, MUTV presenter Mandy Henry introduced the next called as being a 'Usain from Jamaica' and added: 'It's not Usain Bolt is it?' Bolt, a triple-triple Olympic champion and the fastest man of all-time. replied: 'It is Usain Bolt'.
Dutch of class: Was Fergie wrong to get rid of me? Of course he was... But at least I know how to treat players as a manager!
INTERVIEW BY ROB DRAPER: Jaap Stam is chuckling at the memory. If you played in front of Peter Schmeichel and behind Roy Keane you became used to somewhat forceful verbal interventions when something went wrong. 'And even when it was their mistake, they were still blaming you!' he recalls. 'Pete was like that. Every time he was behind us, screaming at our backs, telling us what to do. If anyone had a shot on target he was giving us the F word and everything. And Roy was the same. Roy wanted every ball and if you gave it to someone else and they lost it, Roy was shouting, "Why didn't you give it to me?"' It is just over 15 years ago that Stam was drummed out of Old Trafford, ejected by Sir Alex Ferguson in one of the most brutal player departures of the manager's 26-year career.
The Mail on Sunday sports editor Alison Kervin reflects on a 25-year career after receiving an OBE: 'I’m not sure that any other career offers the sheer diversity of experience'
No good news ever comes in a brown envelope; everyone knows that. But, in mid-November, a thick, official-looking envelope landed on my doormat informing me that I was to be made an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list. It is a tremendous honour to be nominated for services to sports journalism and I’ve found myself thinking back through my career, remembering everyone who helped me along the way, those whose doubts spurred me on and those whose encouragement kept me going.

CHELSEA 4-2 STOKE - OLIVER HOLT AT STAMFORD BRIDGE: What was expected to be a routine win over a struggling Stoke team turned into a battle royal at Stamford Bridge. There were times when Chelsea's assault on the record books seemed in serious doubt but, one way or another, they made a way. Twice, Stoke came from behind as Chelsea's defence struggled to cope with their aerial bombardment and, in particular, the presence of Peter Crouch. Chelsea seemed at a loss for some periods but they never lost belief and they kept hitting back. They made a way.
Pogba and Martial complete dramatic late fightback as Manchester United stun Boro to win fifth successive game
MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 MIDDLESBROUGH - JOE BERNSTEIN AT OLD TRAFFORD: Late goals by Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba helped Manchester United complete a famous comeback victory after they trailed to Middlesbrough and raged against the injustice of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's disallowed goal. United were left raging after referee Lee Mason chalked off Ibra's 39th-minute goal for a high foot that left Middlesbrough goalkeeper Victor Valdes rolling around in what appeared to be exaggerated agony. The mood of Jose Mourinho and his players darkened further when they hit the woodwork twice and saw Grant Leadbitter undeservedly shoot the visitors ahead after 67 minutes. But a double strike in little over 60 seconds then turned the game and earned United their sixth consecutive victory and stretched their unbeaten run to 12 matches.

Rodgers inflicts more Old Firm misery on Rangers as Sinclair winner stretches unstoppable Celtic's lead to 19 points
Celtic hit back to beat bitter rivals Rangers 2-1 at Ibrox and extend their overwhelming lead at the top of the Ladbrokes Premiership. The visitors, whose win moved them 19 points clear of their opponents, fell behind in the 12th minute when Josh Windass' smart through-ball got James Tavernier in on the right of the area and he fired a cross across goal for 37-year-old Kenny Miller to stab home at the back post. Celtic have dropped just two points in the league all season, though, and were level when Moussa Dembele slammed a bouncing ball into the top corner in the 33rd minute.

New face of racing Chamberlin doesn't lack passion, but can arrival of ITV make sure racing is in rude health?
MARCUS TOWNEND: If proof were needed that Ed Chamberlin, the new anchor of ITV's racing coverage, is passionate about the sport he will start presenting to the nation from Cheltenham this afternoon, it comes in a story from his darkest hours. When the 2009 Cheltenham Festival started, the 42-year-old sports presenter was not in his favourite corner of the Cotswolds to witness the most compelling meeting of the jumps season but in the intensive care unit of Southampton General Hospital undergoing gruelling chemotherapy for stomach cancer. But Chamberlin was determined he would still see the action. 'I had to bribe the staff and probably made history by being the first person to have a television in intensive care because I couldn't miss the Festival,' Chamberlin recalled.
