Arsenal 2-0 Crystal Palace: Outrageous scorpion kick from Olivier Giroud and Alex Iwobi

ARSENAL 2-0 CRYSTAL PALACE - MATT BARLOW AT THE EMIRATES STADIUM:Think of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 'scorpion' style goal against Sunderland. Think of Jack Wilshere’s goal against Norwich, three years ago, a slick and intricate Arsenal sweep of the pitch with a sting in the tail. Put them together and you get Olivier Giroud’s goal against Crystal Palace. An exquisite moment of such delight that will probably survive the next 364 days and still be the Premier League’s best goal of 2017. It is certainly the most outrageous of this season. And it was, as Arsenal supporters were quick to gloat, falling over each other in a race to tap the keys of social media, better than Mkhitaryan’s by virtue of the build-up, the great distance from goal – and the fact it was onside.

Watford 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur: Harry Kane and Dele Alli both at the double

WATFORD 1-4 TOTTENHAM - SAM MOKBEL AT VICARAGE ROAD: New year, same old Harry Kane. Two goals and a brace of assists for the Tottenham striker on his first outing of the year. Olivier Giroud and Henrikh Mkhitaryan both scored scorpion kick wonder goals within six

It was a case of anything you can do I can do better for Olivier Giroud and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, after the Arsenal striker scored a 'scorpion' flick wonder goal to rival that of the Manchester United play-maker. Mkhitaryan wrote the headlines on Boxing day with his sublime heel-flicked finish against Sunderland at Old Trafford, but just six days later Arsenal man Giroud went and perfectly copied his heroics during the Gunners' clash with Crystal Palace. As Giroud's effort crashed in off the underside of the crossbar former pro Gary Neville hailed it as 'one of the best goals i've ever seen.'

Leeds United sat on top of the Premier League on New Year's Day in 2002... they were a

A decade and a half ago, an unfamiliar name ended New Year’s Day top of the Premier League. It was not Manchester United, not Chelsea, not Arsenal or Liverpool. After a brilliant 3-0 win against West Ham, Leeds United sat atop the pile. The English game’s greatest sleeping giants hurtled downwards within three years. Life at Elland Road, until recently, has not been great. Just 15 years ago, though, David O’Leary was in charge of an exciting young side that looked like they could be the team of the new millennium. They were one of the last great homegrown sides of English football. Just look at the list of players who lined up against West Ham - of those Jonathan Woodgate, Ian Harte, Alan Smith, Gary Kelly and David Batty all came through the club’s Thorp Arch academy. On the bench were three more academy produced players, Paul Robinson, Stephen McPhail and Harpal Singh, while only fitness woes kept out Harry Kewell.

Manchester United legend Jaap Stam takes his rejuvenated Reading to Old Trafford in the FA

INTERVIEW BY ROB DRAPER: Jaap Stam is chuckling at the memory. If you played in front of Peter Schmeichel and behind Roy Keane you became used to somewhat forceful verbal interventions when something went wrong. 'And even when it was their mistake, they were still blaming you!' he recalls. 'Pete was like that. Every time he was behind us, screaming at our backs, telling us what to do. If anyone had a shot on target he was giving us the F word and everything. And Roy was the same. Roy wanted every ball and if you gave it to someone else and they lost it, Roy was shouting, "Why didn't you give it to me?"' It is just over 15 years ago that Stam was drummed out of Old Trafford, ejected by Sir Alex Ferguson in one of the most brutal player departures of the manager's 26-year career.
