2016 has been a year filled with outstanding sporting events with the Rio Olympics and European Championship in France among the highlights.

And with a new generation of social media users progressing in their respective sporting fields, some have made headlines for good and bad reasons on Twitter.

Fans have also got involved by posting hilarious tweets at and about sports stars.

Here, Sportsmail picks out some of the best, funniest and entertaining social media posts of the year.

Samir Nasri's Twitter account was recently hacked and he was accused of cheating on his former girlfriend Anara Atanes. The tweets claimed he had 'full sexual service' from a Drip Doctors nurse. The tweets have now been deleted and the Manchester City midfielder, who is on loan at Sevilla, has denied any wrongdoing.

A Twitter user noticed Jurgen Klopp's double was sitting behind him on the Liverpool bench to the amusement of the Internet. The German tactician's doppelgänger is fitness coach Andreas Kornmayer.

One of the best stories of 2016 was Leicester defying the odds to win the Premier League title. This moment posted on Christian Fuchs' Twitter captured the moment Leicester won the title brilliantly.

West Ham co-owner David Gold was tricked by a mischievous Twitter user. Internet prankster @Gxmble posted a photograph of The Inbetweeners stars Will McKenzie, played by Simon Bird, and his mother Polly McKenzie, played by Belinda Stewart-Wilson, and asked the 80-year-old West Ham chairman for a retweet. And he fell for it...

Being employed as an Olympic lifeguard wouldn't exactly be hard when you consider the swimmers are of an elite standard. This lifeguard, unsurprisingly, looks incredibly bored ahead of a race.

Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe took to the social media platform to issue a rallying cry to everyone connected with the club in October.

The only problem with his tweet is he didn't write it as it was clearly a message sent by a member of his PR team.

Victor Anichebe tweeted this on Sunday - which included the message from his social media manager saying 'Can you tweet something like'

Daily Telegraph journalist Jonathan Liew is incredibly funny and this was one of his best tweets of 2016. Mesut Ozil is pictured at Mecca but manages to find space to take a photo, replicating his ability to evade his opponents on the football field.

Premier League funny man Peter Crouch fired back at a critic who slammed his skills on popular video game FIFA. The user said 'you ruin my life on FIFA' to which he replied: 'At least I'm getting a game somewhere.'

Eidur Gudjohnsen trolled Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho by jokingly tweeting that he is still getting the best out of Chelsea despite moving to their rivals as the Blues had just beaten the Red Devils 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Cats can't take free-kicks (as far as we know) but if they did then they would look something like this...

Conor McGregor's retirement from UFC lasted just five days as he first revealed he had decided to hang up his gloves only to announce his dramatic U-turn less than a week later.

Last but not least is a tweet from a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Where else would the maverick forward announce he was joining Manchester United?!
