Naomi Watts had a tough 2016 with the end of her long-term relationship with Liev Schreiber.

But she saw the old year out and the new one in enjoying a vacation with her two sons and friends in Mexico.

The actress, 48, donned a turquoise strapless swimsuit as she waded in the ocean with her kids on Sunday on a Cancun beach.

The lithe blonde appeared happy and relaxed as she spent time with her family.

She was joined in the water by youngest son Sam, eight, who wore fluorescent orange trunks and a multi-colored shirt.

He seemed to have found something in the sea and handed it over to his mom for her to look at.

Sam also has an older brother Sasha, nine.

Naomi has posted several snaps from her vacation to her Instagram including one on Saturday night with the caption: 'Ring in 2017!! Happy New Year from Mexico have fun everyone!!'

She and Schreiber ended their 11-year relationship in September.

They stated that the most important thing going forward was the happiness of their sons.

On Sunday she shared a black and white photo of her sons and other children enjoying 'story time and star gazing' before heading back home Monday morning.
