In the past, airports were waiting rooms filled with boredom, soggy sandwiches and weak cups of tea. 

But these days, they are centres of commerce and entertainment, with designer shops, yoga lounges, rooftop pools and ice rinks all on offer.

We've rounded up some of the best amenities that have been on offer at airports throughout the world for passengers travelling in 2016... 

A pet pig at San Francisco Airport

LiLou the therapy pig touched down at San Francisco International Airport in November in a bid to help calm nervous fliers.

She is the first known airport therapy pig in the United States, and she surprises and delights guests at SFO with her winning personality, charming costumes, and painted nails. 

A rooftop pool at Singapore's Changi Airport 

Singapore Changi Airport has a rooftop pool and spa, where travellers can relax before their flight and catch some rays 

Changi has an array of activities for passengers, from the tallest slide in an airport and a cactus garden to high-end shops and hawker food.

The ice rink and live music shows at Seoul's Incheon Airport 

Seoul's Incheon Airport is home to an 'ice' rink that's open year round, allowing passengers to practise their skate technique in any weather.

If you have your own skates, which would be a strange thing to carry in your hand luggage, entry is free. 

Passengers using Seoul's Incheon Airport can try out their ice rink and witness one of the many live music performances by local musicians 

Otherwise for between 2,000 – 4,000 South Korean Won (around £3), you can hire skates and a safety helmet. 

The airport also has a museum and musicians regularly put on live performances for travellers.

The planetarium at Tokyo's Haneda Airport 

Tokyo's Haneda Airport is the only one in the world with a Planetarium.

You can get coffee and snacks before settling in to count some 40million stars. 

It also holds special cultural activities throughout the year, where you can become familiar with Japanese culture by participating in a hands-on Kokeshi and Origami making session.

Yoga at Frankfurt airport  

If you're travelling through Frankfurt, you can pop into one of two yoga lounges at the airport. 

Mats are available in both spaces and the free facility is open 24 hours a day.
